At least for me.
Thanks to sports in college and being fairly popular in high school, I've got close to 300 friends on Facebook. I still do use Facebook primarily for messaging, groups, and such especially during the school year, so it still has its use, but I just don't know why it's so hard for me to unfriend people I don't remotely stay in touch with, only tertiarily knew in high school, had a single class with in college, or any combination of those. The worst is when I'm friends with someone and I can no longer remember where I know them from.
I guess in a sense it's sort of harmless, they just show up on my feed, though I've been pretty vicious about unfriending people for crazy political or inflammatory stuff. Dunno why it's so much harder to prune for people that are just going about their lives.

It's just part of wanting to be nice.
If you don't want to be a dick about something so insignificant, I'd wager that you probably think similarly about "bigger" things. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Actually, I think that's something to feel good about.

You're apparently not a dick like me, I budget cut people with a quickness if I find them the least bit tedious. Entertain me or GTFO.

You can leave them as friends but remove them from your timeline Then you'll eventually forget about them.

Yeah, I usually just unfollow people from the newsfeed.
I've often wondered how many people have done the same to me. Cuz I'm post all sorts of stuff I'm interested in, that only like 2% of the friends list could possibly care about.

I find it easy to use the ban-hammer on my facebook page...I've blocked many ranging from an ex-girlfriend, to family members, and even a few independent wrestlers...
The concept is simple...don't be stupid, and don't spam my page/feed with your garbage, and you're cool. Like someone said earlier, entertain me or GTFO

Facebook is still a thing? I unfriended all of them and deleted my account 3 years ago. Twitter is cool though to talk to celebs and wrestling fans.

I've thought about removing some distant relatives (as in, I think we share one great grandparent) who I've never once met, but never got around to it. There was one time I had to identify photos of friends in order to confirm my identity, and I was hoping that some of them wouldn't show up since I have no idea what their names are.

Did this once with a bunch of people then I dunno faith and karma decided to be a dick and I saw all these people in a span of 3 hours after I left the house although it did simmer down my hate for them after a few hours of conversations it was really awkward when they added me again.

I don't unfriend anyone unless their political crap goes into crazy territory or they post anything racist, sexist, or anything along those lines. I've wanted to defriend people who I never talk to, but sometimes it's nice to see what other people are doing.

Yeah usually if they post a bunch of political or religious stuff on the Book of Face, I tend to just unfollow them rather than unfriend them. Unless they really annoy me or piss me off or I call them out on their stupidity.
Otherwise people just unfriend me. And with around 500 friends, it's hard to figure out who the hell did that. I do research, but after like 5 minutes I'm like, "Eh screw it. Gonna go play video games."

Okay, why unfollow someone or remove them from your timeline if you don't want to be friends with them? I can understand if it's the usual whiney status, overly political, or racist statements that can and will rub people the wrong way. But if it's something positive, enlightening, or inspiring why unfollow that particular person?

It's much more fun to just leave condescending comments on their timeline, or ones that ruin their attention-seeking posts. I do it all the time, I guess because I'm a dick, but still no one unfriends me for some reason. I mean, even this one annoying girl who kept posting the same posed breast-feeding pics (because Facebook allows it) didn't when after a slew of annoying responses by others I just wrote "Nice tits." She simply stopped posting the pics altogether, still responds to my own posts, and messages me for some strange reason despite my troll response designed to weird her into stopping. I don't get it.

The thing I absolutely can't stand is when people post that they're going to be 'purging' their friends list, and, "...if you're still on here after the purge, consider yourself lucky." They go on and say that they'll unfriend anyone who doesn't...fit into certain 'friend' type criteria (i.e. 'liking' posts, commenting regularly, etc.)
If you're going to delete people from your friends list, then just do it silently without posting something and making yourself sound like a drama queen.
Unless it's a close friend, I typically respond to these posts by commenting, "I'll do us both a favor and delete myself. I can't stand people who act like teenagers on here."

So purging the friends list on Facebook is going to be in the next Purge?

But if it's something positive, enlightening, or inspiring why unfollow that particular person? For me, most of the time, it's relatives who post nothing but tons of political stuff, most of which is either ignorant or blatantly false. I don't want to hurt their feelings, but I don't want to see it either, so I just hide them. Problem solved.
