I follow Arsenio Hall on Twitter and he mentioned that he felt Robin Williams would definitely be on the Mt. Rushmore of comics, so I thought I'd start a thread.
Now, who do you think, (whether they are your 4 faves or not) belong on the Mt. Rushmore of stand up comedians?
I wouldn't count the ones that were more hosts than anything, like Jack Benny and Milton Berle, but thos that started, or wen't their career mostly doing standup
I agree with 1.Robin Williams of course
2.Richard Pryor-His influence will always be felt
I don't think you could ever leave either of them off.
3.Bill Cosby-for his influence and he definitely broke down the color barrier on television, I know that transcends stand up, but that is part of his influence
4.George Carlin-He's my fave and again, VERY influential, which is what a lot of this comes down to-guys that laid the groundwork and were fantastic at what they did
What's yours?

Richard Pryor and George carlin for sure. Lenny Bruce should be, but he not a must be. Andy Kaffman Steve Martin and robin Williams can all be argued for the 4th slot. If Hicks gets a statue built than somebody better deface it with the word Freebird!

Steve Martin (alt comedy) Lenny Bruce (social satirist), Dick Gregory (social/racially cognizant humor) and Andy Kauffman (envelope pushing madman, shock value).
Very generally speaking of course.

Dane Cook Carlos Mencia Larry the Cable Guy Gallagher That mountain would be made out of Prilosec OTC, watermelons and other comedian's work. And for the record, Gallagher *WAS* funny. He shouldn't even be with those shitbags. Put Andrew Dice Clay on there instead.

I think it's more a statement of comedians disdain for prop comics. I could have put carrot top on the mountain as well, but carrot top gets enough shit as it is.

I can't say who it should be objectively speaking, but if I was just doing one to make myself happy, it would be:
George Carlin Patton Oswalt Louis CK Mitch Hedberg

If anyone is familiar with the old TV show "Make Me Laugh" go watch Gallagher on that...he's absolutely hilarious.
Comedy is subjective, and prop comedy is usually the bottom of the barrel, but the right person can make it work. I'd actually change the word "prop" and change it to gimmick, whereas anyone who takes the stage relies on a certain act to entertain as opposed to just blue work, so really anyone from Andy Kaufman to Zach Galafanakis can be considered as such...but again, it depends on personal taste.

I wouldn't have put Robin Williams on there before he passed, and I'm not going to do it now. It's very difficult to choose just four since there are so many valid choices, and if you asked me later who I think should be on there it may very well be different, but as of right now I'd say:
Carlin and Pryor are locks, they're going to be on there every single time. I don't think I can respect a "Mt. Rushmore" that doesn't have at LEAST one of them. Cosby would probably be on there every time as well. For the fourth spot I'd go with Lenny Bruce. I'm trying to be objective here, as much as I might enjoy certain comedians more (Mitch Hedburg being my all-time favorite).
