I think it's too difficult to do a Mount Rushmore of stand up comedy as what people find funny can be so very varied. Then adding different countries to the mix shakes it up even more. If I hadn't read this thread and a friend asked me to name 4 top stand up comedians I'd have probably gone for Rowan Akinson, Peter Kay, Jasper Carrott and Bill Bailey whilst debating including Jack Dee, Jimmy Carr, Billy Connolly, Paul Merton, Chris Rock and Lee Evans. Pryor, Carlin, Cosby, and Steve Martin wouldn't have even registered as an option. To me a guy from England, Pryor is the guy in Superman 3, Carlin I know of from Kevin Smith movies and a uni friend having his dvd, Cosby from some american sitcoms whose name escapes me and Steve Martin I just don't find to be that funny anyway. (I am aware they did stand up but they have/had no exposure over here.) It's so subjective that a Mount Rushmore of standup comedy for my dad might be Les Dawson, Tommy Cooper, Ronnie Corbett and Tony Hancock (none of which mentioned here) while as another example most Americans see Hugh Laurie and think House while most English people think A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Blackadder comedy programs. Mt. Rushmore obviously implies the USofA. You guys can have the Stonehenge of comics I guess.

Dane Cook Carlos Mencia Larry the Cable Guy Gallagher Oh you wanted the good comics Mt. Rushmore? Well that's too hard. Gallagher's non-messy routine was actually pretty smart and good. The shame of it all is that he will only be remembered for the Sledge-O-Matic. My choices are as follows: Richard Pryor Bill Cosby George Carlin Jeff Foxworthy (I know, but no one makes that much money as a touring comedian for so damned long without being really good) Lenny Bruce got consideration from me due to his massive influence, but how many people have had access to all of his material? Greatness in a relative vacuum (due to the controversy he created) is greatness wasted. Eddie Murphy got some consideration from me as well, but really wasn't a stand-up comic for very long. His success sparked opportunities in Hollywood that ultimately means that he is a movie/TV star who got his start in comedy. The same could be said of a lot of talented comedians like Williams, Crystal, Seinfeld, Roseanne, etc. Robert Klein got some consideration from me as he pioneered the whole HBO comedy special, which was a large boon to the industry. Lewis Black is another long-timer that got consideration from me as I think he is absolutely hilarious. I think Patton Oswalt could deserve a spot if he sticks to touring as a comedian, but I have reservations. I have yet to see him in a role that I did not love him in, so I want him to act in everything if he can.

This is a tough one. George Carlin and Richard Pryor are absolute musts because they are two of the most iconic names in stand-up comedy. Once you get beyond them there are a lot of people you can make arguments for and I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer for the last two spots.
