As old as the footage is it's still pretty disturbing so warning. In fact I'm going to link to it rather than embed: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoKi4coyFw0So yeah I looked this up today after reading about it again. From what I recall the backstory is this elephant attacked a trainer. Ever the opportunist Edison decided to stage this as a publicity stunt using his rival's way to generate electricity to kill the elephant and in turn making the other dude look like a dick instead.

Well, if you don't already know that Edison was a colossal prick you should.

Look, I know this makes Edison look like a real dick along with being the first patent troll in American history and basically tried to hijack the film industry, but you have to put it in the context of the times: The demand for flash-fried elephant meat was at an all-time high.

Yeah, it was to show off how dangerous Tesla and Westinghouse's Alternating Current was compared to Edison's Direct Current.

That video has become a bit of a meme among my friends, or rather Edison's apparent love of Casual Elephant Murder.
Seriously......Edison was an asshole! He was a patant thief, lied to discredit ANYONE that dared to speak against his (Marketed) theories, and anyone that sees him as more an inventer than a glorified Ad-Man....is sorely mistaken.

Saw this many years ago. Never had any respect for Edison, despite all his patents. He basically hoodwinked a lot of people and launched a propaganda campaign against AC to try to besmirch Tesla (who was once an apprentice of Edison's). He regularly electrocuted stray animals to try to show how dangerous AC was. However, AC ended up becoming the power source of choice.

Edison would have made a great heel manager.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is Thomas Edison and I am the advocate for my client, The Volt Incarnate, Direct Current!!!"

This makes me appreciate the scene where Homer Simpson runs over his ghost more. For all his accomplishments, people usually gloss over the fact he was a dickhead.
Makes you think about what happened to Augustin Le Prince... I still think Edison had some involvement in that.

I read an article in Weird NJ about how he invented the electric chair for the same purposes. Edison was a brilliant and hard working man-but he was weirder than Weirrd Al.

In one of his books, Bobby Heenan mentioned seeing an old TV show that was airing footage of an elephant being electrocuted. Being a child at the time, Bobby asked his mother (who he says he got his sense of humor from) "Why are they doing that?" Her response was, "You ever try to hang one?" Well, in a town not far from where I went to college....they did. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}https://sp3.yimg.com/ib/th?id=HN.608053286451414351&pid=15.1
