During a conversation with my brother yesterday, I asked him if he will be doing the ice bucket challenge that is making such waves right now. He very vehemently refused and cited his diabetes as his reason. In his words, "When you have something of your own, it changes your perspective" and he even seemed a but butter that diabetes research does not recurve the same kind of press. And so, in my brother's honor, I am thinking of starting the ice bath challenge. It's pretty self explanatory, and I would wear my swim trunks to do it. Anyone think I shoujd?

So... I don't get the connection between ALS and dumping a bucket of ice water over your head. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that it's for a good cause, it's just... why the need for the ice bucket thing? Couldn't people just... promote the association without that?

Couldn't people just... promote the association without that? it was started by a fellow with ALS. That's basically it. You're supposed to film yourself doing it, then challenge 3 people. Those challenged that don't do it are then required to donated $100 to the ALS Society. So most people just do it so they end up not actually donating... though some do regardless.

The ice bucket stuff is dangerous. There's a real chance at a heart attack due to sudden shock.

Alright, fair enough. Also, if you want to do something like that, Sephiroth, I'd say stick to the bucket because going into a bathtub full of ice is just begging for a catastrophe.

Yes, sadly I don't think the original idea of raising awareness for ALS and/or donating has reached the UK. My Facebook feed is filled with folk doing the bucket with no mention of it.

On the other hand, they've raised several million dollars and a lot of awareness with it, which completely shatters any sort of charity for ALS previously. I'm not going to shit on a good cause even if people ignorantly think it's just a publicity stunt and nothing else. It's doing a lot of good for a disease that doesn't receive a lot of attention and charity compared to other "sexier" diseases.

I'd just donate your money or time to an organization that does work already there.
