Likeable can turn bland quite quickly though. I think you need an edge. It's my one criticism of Cena that he doesn't have it either. He seems a nice guy and all but I don't find that 'must watch'. For me you need an edge or an element of dickishness to stand out otherwise you're just part of the "Thanks for coming out folks" waving, smiling baby kissers.
I'd like to see Bryan have an edge rather than what he was doing before the injury which seemed to be grinning all the time.
It ruins my suspension of disbelief if when an angle is playing out one of the participants have that "I'm just happy to be here" grin on his face. Like when Janetty would get punched in the face and lay on the floor beaming from ear to ear. It just doesn't sit right.

They just want to wrestle and put on a good match for the fans. That edge doesn't need to come out until they've been backed into a corner.

That's why I said he has his quirks. He has a long goofy beard. He corpses at times he shouldn't. He doesn't take the SUPER SERIOUS WWE EVENTS nearly as seriously as Michael Cole does. He's inexplicably married to a Bella. He has a crowd chant. He's not an ultra-bland babyface with no personality. He's just not Mr. I'm So Cool and Tough and Badass. He's not that way, until he has to be.

I lost my taste for deliberately edgy wrestling characters years ago, it looks more and more forced the older I get. Give me a happy dork like Bryan or Cena at times that gets serious when needed.
Bob Backlund was great at that sort of thing, even as a babyface (and in retrospect, he was always more charismatic than he was given credit for). He was pretty much a boy next door who was more than willing to go nuts and brawl if needed.

There's room for both, they're different kinds of rebellion.
Daniel Bryan is "You wanna screw me, I'll turn up, do what I love, as good as I can till the people make me the best"
Dean Ambrose is "You wanna screw me? I'll mess with you every way I can even ways you don't even know yet"
Just like in the Attitude era, you had Stone Cold for the "take no bs do what you want" fans, and Rock for the "this guy is so awesome" fans.
