My 22 yr old son just called to tell me his step-father shot himself in the head in front of my son's mother (my ex-wife). My son and I have always been close, his mom left me for this guy 18 years ago. They have two daughters of their own, who also were witness to this tragedy. I have no idea how to react. I told my son I am here for him and anything he needs; a shoulder to cry on, a sounding board with which to scream his frustrations. I am completely numb- where do I go from here? My son is everything to me. He is smart, successful, everything you would ever want from your child (and yes I know I'm biased). Sorry for the babble, my mind thoughts are travelling at the speed of light.

That's horrible. Just do what you're doing in terms of being there for your kid.

Be there for your son, and hell, maybe even your ex. Doesn't mean do anything stupid with that, but I can only imagine they'll be in a really, really shitty place right now and for your son's sake, lending her an ear or something is probably a small sacrifice.

Geez man. That's really about the worst thing you could have to deal with. I feel terrible for you and family. I can't say much other just I'm sorry and I hope you can all pull through this.

Bloody hellfire. Well, yes, offer up all the support you can. They're going to need a pillar-and-a-half to lean on so just be there for them all, don't have to worry about rushing around trying to do everything under the sun but do be there. Will be thinking of you.

Jesus man. My condolences to you and your son. No-one should have to deal with that shit, especially that young. My grandad saw a friend of his kill himself by walking into the propeller on a plane when he was stationed in Egypt in WW2, and he said he never really got over it. You're in my thoughts man.

You probably already know this but be his dad, because that's what he'll need now. Be an open ear when he needs to vent and listen without judging. Be his rock. But I'm sure you're already doing that, be strong for his sake. Good luck.

Yeah, absolutely echoing all the sentiments here; good Lord, I can't begin to comprehend how to handle that right away.
Definitely be there for them, and be supportive. Witnessing somebody dying like that, especially in such a sudden, violent way, can leave a mark on the mind, and I'm sure it absolutely cannot be easy for a 22 year old to comprehend. If it starts eating at him, absolutely let him sound off any way he has to.

Just be there-and stay there. This is something that will probably sick with them for life, I am sad to say. Something very serious must have been going on for him to want to do that with an audience.

Considering just how disturbed he had to have been I'm glad that at-least he didn't completely snap and try to take somebody else with him.

You're clearly shocked by it, you're clearly hit hard by it too but you said to your kid the EXACT right thing he probably needed to hear. You're a hell of a dad, dude.

THANK YOU F.A.N. wrestling lovers, your responses have truly been a shoulder to lean on. I have been a LONG time lurker of this site, just for the members and their humorous, intelligent (esp. for a wrestling forum), and sometimes outright genius insights into the galaxy we call pro wrestling.
Quick update: my son is moving back in with me for now; he is handling all arrangements for his mother (like I said, he is AMAZING) and has put his mom and 2 sisters up in a wonderful hotel until a new house/apt. can be found.
Again, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
-Chris
