it's heartbreaking when a kid comes across pony porn when trying to look up their favorite pony.

I watch some cartoons to this day that I'd probably not admit to enjoying around certain people like Powerpuff Girls and Rugrats, I listen to some weird music too, I don't look down on people who have other interests.
I get the feeling though that this whole MLP thing has taken off mainly as a statement against gender specific interests, probably because in the 80s it was either MLP and Care Bears for girls or He-Man and Thundercats for boys, if they decided to reboot an 80s boys cartoon in the new MLP style I don't think it would've gotten this big adult/teen fanbase.

I understand the argument that the writing is smart, but you know what else has smart writing? Shows geared towards adults. Oh really? *insert reality shows here*

I'm a fan of the show, but I can't in good conscience call myself a brony. The fandom's become a really vile and surprisingly sexist place. The little subgroup here on the FAN is one of the few parts of it that's still enjoyable.

I got no problem with the show itself or even just liking the show. The sexually explicit drawings though? Kinda weird, not gonna lie.

It's a cute show. I watch it with my nieces occasionally. There aren't enough kids' shows these days that the whole family can watch together, so I appreciate that about it. Some people are overly obsessed with it, but the same can be said for Star Wars, Doctor Who, etc.

Ok.....Long and short of WHY it became the "Phenomenon" that it did.....(To the best of my recollection)
Before the show came out, Lauren Faust (Creator of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Writer/Animator for PPG, Wife of Craig McCracken) was tapped to reboot it. The Internet finds out (Ok.....Mostly....A certain Numerically named forum whose name seems to summon the worst of the internet) and then gets angry for her "Selling out" by making a "30 minute long commercial". This was compounded by the fact that Hasbro created a network for this new show. It seemed like a perfect storm for a horrible show.
And then it wasn't bad.
In a time when snark was prevalent, MLP came out and was....sincere, it WASN'T a commercial. It was a well-written show, with GOOD writers continuing to be part of it that HAPPENED to be based on a classic toy line.
The Bronies...that was basically a mutation/explosion. A show of that quality will have fans. The "problem" was that these fans...were disaffected 20-somethings of BOTH genders. You've got a callback to when these people were actually children, and a forum (The Internet) where they can discuss it and CREATE things based on it.
Then Hasbro found out. The original C&Ds killed a lot of fan-made content, there was a Fighting game literally weeks from release that was Solid, balanced, and ran on the Skullgirls engine that died.
However Hasbro remembered it liked money.
Then it started to try to...advertise to the "Brony" fanbase, meta-commercials, actual merchandise for the adult fan (Fun Fact, Quite a lot of the shirts and such were Fanmade designs from WeLoveFine, not directly Owned by Hasbro, but......They own the licensing rights), and You've got the Documentary (Personally ...I'd avoid it. Mostly because Its not a documentary...it's ....not.)
Personally I Do like the show, I still think it's mostly well-written even after Faust's departure after the second season, The songs are catchy (Daniel Ingram is a great composer), The Comic by IDW is better than the show IMO, and I've met quite a few wonderful people through the fandom of the show.
Hate the term "Brony" though. More because while I identify as a fan......I think of that term as one would "Trekkie" or "Superfan", an obsessive that HAS to see all aspects of their life through the prism of their fandom.

The little subgroup here on the FAN is one of the few parts of it that's still enjoyable. Unfortunately true. It used to be awesome to me but over time I just can't engage with a lot of them any longer. The subgroup here is great, as is the Round Stable forums (I know some of the staff members from the days of TitansGo.net, and they're good people), and I have some brony friends on Twitter, etc. But that's really it for me anymore.

I think it's partly because a very vocal subsection of the fandom treated themselves as the most important consumers of the series - above the girls whose femininity it celebrated - and the ties with MRAs and the kind of people who need to put 'bro' in front of anything to make it seem more masculine.

I guess I just don't understand how people can like it THAT much.
Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy watching "girly" shows even in my adulthood. Hell, I've been working my way through Sabrina the Teenage Witch recently. But I don't know why people have entire 50+ page threads dedicated to MLP, or visit forums dedicated to it, or go to conventions and call themselves "bronies".
I'm not sure I'd do that for any TV show. The whole thing is just weird to me.

I feel concerned by anyone who allows any sort of TV show or movie to dominate their lives. I don't dislike them but it's concerning. People can like what they like, what the f*** right do I have to say anything against that? I mean, I might not wanna have a long ass discussion about it but keep doin' you if that's what you're doin'.

I don't honestly care. But, I'd think if there was any bewilderment, it would come from the fact that in its inception, the show was designed to appeal to little girls and sell toys, just like the original. The fact that it has smart writing, etc. gravitated adults to it since then, but to some, especially parents, it would come across as disturbing to know 25 year old dudes were obsessed with the same show as their little girls. To them, they'd automatically assume perversion. That's actually not true, one thing I do know is that it was made for one of the creators little boys who liked a lot of feminine things so you get the clash of male/female/"feminine is beautiful" stuff. It's an assumption that it's a little girls show, but it's not, it's for kids but has also apparently has had many shows made specifically for the adult crowd over the children. And if anything gives a bit of light to highlighting how much bullshit applying gender at birth is then that's good to me. I agree. But the popular perception amongst those ignorant to that is that it is for little girls. It's similar to the stigma that wrestling is just for rednecks.
