Col. Parker's team of Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck were the tag team champions around the start of Nitro in 1995. One was dressed as a guy at a Garth Brooks concert, the other wearing long underwear, suspenders, and the tightest jeans pre-Batista. They just seemed mismatched other than they were Southern and had Col Parker as a manager.
Why were these two old fellers around and getting pushed in 1995? Were they old friends of Hogan like everyone else that was being pushed? Or was Bischoff just really impressed by the size of Col Parker's crank that he gave his old buddies the tag gold?

They weren't pals of Hogan, far as I know. Jimmy Golden (Bunkhouse) had been a Tennessee mainstay for years before this, and Slater had previously had numerous runs in WCW and the various promotions that mutated into it (Mid-Atlantic, Georgia, UWF, Florida), usually as a top guy or strong B-guy. Wonder how much of it had been Ole and Dusty getting Slater spots throughout the 90s (He and Dusty were JCP tag champs years before)...Bunkhouse, Barbarian, Enos, Murdoch, Valentine (I think)...it didn't hurt that he kept showing up to replace Terry Funk in different matches (Slater was long seen as a pale Funk imitator).

Well, they were more successful than Slater's next team, "Rough N' Ready" with Mike Enos. It was never revealed exactly what those guys were ready for, and frankly, we're probably better off not knowing.

I remember off of one of the Southwest DVD's that there was a match between Slater and Dory Funk Jr., where the commentator said that (in essence) this match would be the closest you'd to a Terry vs. Dory match.
(Which actually did happen, once, in All Japan)

They were part of the Studd Stable. Buck was brought in during Parker's feud with Dustin Rhodes. Slater came in after Funk left in late Summer/early Fall '94.

God hogan wcw was so bleh
I wonder why the nasties get called hogan cronies when they were in wcw a year before hogan

Everyone in WCW's tag division got a turn with the Tag Titles in '95 (except the poor Blue Bloods). Heat would regain the titles at Fall Brawl anyway...only to lose it to the American Males on Nitro the next night...Heat would regain them before Halloween Havoc. This is how Harlem Heat became Tag Champs about a dozen times.
The Slater/Buck reign was mainly used to "fuel" the Sherri & Col. Parker feud/romance/whatever.

Never liked Dick Slater. His whole Terry Funk schtik was just really annoying to me.
It's kind of funny seeing Bunkhouse after watching him as Jimmy Golden in Memphis - the contrast is almost as big as when Steve Keirn became Skinner.

The Nasties are joined lips to backside to Hogan these days, wherever he goes, one of more of them will follow if he has any sway, so people assume incorrectly that it was always the case.

I like the Slater/Buck team, even in 1995 when a lot of older wrestlers were still prominently featured they felt like an old-school throwback.

I enjoyed the combo and even though it seemed WCW had a small tag team division at the time, it's because of guys like Nasties, Heat and Bunk and Slater that I remember it being pretty good.
I think Slater came after the Rhodes feud but with so few PPVs at the time, the feud could be drawn out over several PPVs (it lasted from Spring Stampede to Fall Brawl, maybe even Halloween Havoc with Arn and Dustin).
Slater was a main stay in WCW 1990s even though his stints never lasted too long. He was around in 1991 with Dick Murdoch, then I believe in late 1992 as a singles, back in 1995 with Buck through 1996 as a single and back in late 1990s with Enos.

He and Barbarian were the last US tag champs

I loved Bunkhouse Bunk. He and Dustin Rhodes had some fun hardcore brawls back in the day.

Bunkhouse Buck always reminded me of the dad from You Can't Do That on Television.

The differences between Jimmy Golden and Bunkhouse Buck are insane. I saw Jimmy on a legends show several years ago and he put on a damn good match, doing a lot of technical wrestling, getting down on the mat and throwing in some chain wrestling for good measure. He still regularly appears in Knoxville.

I wonder why the nasties get called hogan cronies when they were in wcw a year before hogan Because they were Hogan cronies in the WWF and left WWF the same time as Hogan did. They only appeared in WCW earlier because Hogan was "retired". They stayed in WCW for as long as they did because they were Hogan cronies. Thankfully, Hall and Nash took care of that. Which is why I am forever in their debt.

I think there is a Slater/Hogan connection going back a ways ... wasn't Slater the booker in the Georgia territory when Hogan was Sterling Golden and getting his start?

I think there is a Slater/Hogan connection going back a ways ... wasn't Slater the booker in the Georgia territory when Hogan was Sterling Golden and getting his start? Possible. Also possible they crossed paths in Florida during Hogan's early days. Just never figured there was much to them since they rarely crossed paths after Hogan went national. He wasn't above getting his guys a foot in the door even at the start of his WWF run, Beefcake is proof of that. Even during Slater's lackluster WWF run, there wasn't really much indication there. No house show team-ups or anything and Slater was tossed to the wolves almost immediately in a very throwaway gimmick (whereas Beefcake was given a top manager and weeks of appearances to build up his debut before moving into a top tag situation).
