Death Race 3000 and Castlevania Updates
Via: Coming Soon
While visiting the set of Paul W.S. Anderson’s (Resident Evil, Alien Vs. Predator) next film, Resident Evil: Extinction, his producing partner, Jeremy Bolt, took a moment to talk about their company’s upcoming projects, either one of which may signal Anderson’s return to the director’s chair.
“We’re talking about two projects: ‘Death Race’ [3000] and ‘Castlevania,’” Bolt said. “[It] would be a remake of ‘Death Race 2000,’ with Paramount and Cruise/Wagner, Tom Cruise’s company. Paul wrote the script and we’ve gotten a lot closer. I think we should be making an announcement in the next 2 or 3 weeks.”
As with previous Anderson adaptations, Bolt says fans can expect a new take on the material. “He’s basically taken the idea of reality television and extended it. It’s definitely a comment on society - in particular reality television - but it is not as much a parody or satire as the original.”
There is however one element of the original that they would love to resurrect. “It would be great [if Stallone came back]. We talk about it a lot.”
With the upcoming “Extinction” and this summer’s DOA: Dead or Alive, Anderson is probably the world’s most experienced adapter of video games to film. It’s no surprise then that he is returning to the well once again, this time to bring one of the classic sidescrollers of the 8-bit era to life - Castlevania.
“What Paul has done is to sort of integrate a Dracula origin story with Castlevania, with the story of the Belmonts.”
Bolt also says that they are playing close attention to give the film a unique Castlevania feel, so that fans of the game will feel right at home with the film, even as they go in their own direction. “There’s a fair amount of references [to the game]. We always try to give the fans something that respects their love of the game, but also to give them something completely new, so we’ve added this whole new spin to Castlevania.”
Whatever changes they do make, one crucial element of the Belmont character is remaining unchanged, for now at least. “The whip is in it at the moment.”
