Does anyone know why everytime Greg valentine was in the ring gorilla would say "it takes this guy 20/30/40 mins just get warmed up!"...
Cause I've never seen a valentine match longer than 10 mins, so what's the gag?
Was he just calling him slow?

No, he was saying that Valentine is a slow starter and that he gets stronger as the match goes longer.

It eventually became a go-to line for Valentine's style/character, but I always detected **just** a hint of ball-busting when Gorilla said it.

It takes the Hammer 30 minutes to warm up and me 2 to fall asleep during one of his matches.

Valentine was a more subtle character, and that line really expressed what he was all about. He was an iron horse who could go out and absorb a beating that most men couldn't. With the right opponent, I really enjoyed his matches. His series with Ron Garvin in '89 was really good.

I always figured he was taking the piss and calling him lazy.

Reminds me of when JR would call slightly botched moves "unorthodox" or "modified", or call some guys "hosses" or saying their offense has "bowling shoe tendnencies". Sounds like a stealth insult to me, but I can't be sure.

It would've been nice if the WWF had more 20-30-40 minute matches back then so you could see Valentine getting stronger and his offense getting more effective as he went.

He did have legit long matches in Mid Atlantic and Florida. In those days it was the norm to have 1 hour matches. I remember Gorden Solie would recap house show matches and say stuff we are at the 45 minute mark.
That is an example is why the NWA was superior to the WWF.

he had some very long matches during his first WWWF stint, including at least one 60 minute draw with Backlund, it was probably a call back to that.

If there was a more boring wrestler than Greg Valentine I haven't seen it.

Well I like valentine I'm not knockin him I'm just so sick of hearing about his warm ups... I'd also like to point out that I think the dollar collar chain match between him and piper is the most brutal match ever!

Haha I don't remember the "bowling shoe tendencies" That could be used at any job "Sure, Mike's a nice guy, but what a putz-he has bowling shoe tendencies-no way will he get promoted"

It worked as a line when he was in Royal Rumbles.
Plus his slow tree falling bump was always fun.

It was just Gorilla getting him over. Making the audience aware of how tough he was, that the longer the match went, the greater advantage he'd have.
