I don't see the problem with the name change, but I get HHH's mindset. They could've just let him keep KENTA; it's not like they can't still market the guy.

I have sources that tell me Triple H wanted to give every paying attendee to a WWE Show free hamburgers and sex with the diva or superstar of their choice, but Vince said no, everyone who shows up should be kicked, as hard as possible with a steel-toed boot, in the taint.
They compromised and just decided to produce 3 hours of shitty television every week.

The goofy thing is why announce this big signing of KENTA....and then change his name? Congrats, WWE. You will own Hideo Itami and no one will care. Once Itami ends up doing nothing on the main roster (and WWE's use of Japanese talent in the past would suggest this), he'll end up back in Japan under his own name.

Why couldn't they just keep it? trademark/copyrights? wasn't CM Punk the only guy to keep his indy name?

I don't know why but I find it surreal Vince knows KENTA even before his NXT debut. Sure he's been heavily marketed with Hogan announcing his signing in Japan and name dropped on Raw where Vince oversees all production but still man. I'm just used to all the NEWZ stories that Vince barely knows anyone in developmental and only gets to know them when they are about to be called up.
I still find it weird Vince was the one who interviewed Fandango and he pretty much opened his life story and all his frustrations during his interview.

I like to think they let KENTA decide what his new name would be, because at least Hideo Itami doesn't sound like a stupid ****ing name like they've given some of the other NXT talents who have came in before.

Actually it's been said a few times over that usually the talent are the ones who come up with their new names.

Reports say Triple H was totally going to buy pizza for everybody but Vince was against it. Vince is of the opinion that nobody likes pizza and there was a big argument over it.

No, Japanese fans feel disrespected when WWE broke out Yoshi Tatsu from cold storage for the Japan tours when they know he didn't do shit before that and won't do shit afterwards. Japanese fans come to see a WWE show, not here's your homeland token. They know who Kenta (now Hideo) is. Calling him by his real name or stage name not going to make a difference. How he's treated year round does. Which WWE is doing great right now. I find so deliciously ironic is that all the dirt sheet reports for the past couple of years paint Triple H has the savior and protector of the IWC after spending about a decade making him Satan Incarnate. There is a definite narrative of Vince being super out of touch and Hunter the hippest man in the room. But once he insert himself back into angles, the mood changes. They think that about HHH because he has provided tangible evidence via his running of NXT that he has the superior booking mindset. I myself have been as hard on in-ring Hunter as anyone, but since taking on his new respective roles, his efforts have been excellent and productive, unlike Vince whose RAW has been a stale sack of shit. The differences speak for themselves. That's what I currently judge him on. As for the KENTA/Hideo thing, WWE business in Japan is not very good. At all. The majority of the country's wrestling fans actually prefer their own traditional Puro style, so Hunter's idea to incorporate one of their own, as is, into the WWE umbrella is a much smarter business move than creating some novelty character just part of their traveling circus. WWE's approach has not worked in Japan as is. So branding a national star, much like UFC does with their own international talent, or Bulldog was in the 90's for WWF, is a far better move.

While I feel that if you sign a guy for his name value to a certain audience, you should let him keep his name, I can understand why Vince is against letting him given how Punk walked out, owning his name, and Rey Mysterio Jr is trying to do the same.
