He'll discover his African roots and be renamed Kunta Kenta But the crowds will chant "Toby".

No one has debuted using an un-trademarkeable name since 2008, with the bizarre exception of David Otunga (presumably cos he was already a D-list celebrity of sorts), so it was pretty much inevitable they'd rename him, it's company policy. I doubt there was a massive war of words between Hunter and Vince over it. I'm inclined to agree with the renaming though, people in Japan aren't gonna reject him or not recognise him just cos he has a different name, so he'll still be just as marketable to that audience, and the average American fan will be seeing him for the first time anyway, so they may as well change his name to something they can make money from.

Honestly I prefer the new name, though I'd have left it as-is. In general though, I'm pretty much inclined to side with Triple H on anything like this. Imagine six years ago or so being told he'd one day become a god among Internet fans constantly having his praises sung. Six years ago? Try one year ago. This "Triple H is awesome" thing is still jarring to me. For the record, I liked Triple H before it was cool *puts on hipster specs*

Vince: HIDEO!

HHH: KENTA!
Vince: HIDEO!
HHH: LORD PALMERSTON!
Vince: PIT THE ELDER!

I don't even care about the HHH/Vince argument that may or may not be real, I'm just glad he's Hideo Itami now because I'm sick and f***ing tired of people not having last names.
...or first names.
Point is, enough of this one name bullshit for characters it makes no sense for.
KENTA/Hideo Itami isn't some scary demonoid thing like Kane, he's just some dude.

No, Japanese fans feel disrespected when WWE broke out Yoshi Tatsu from cold storage for the Japan tours when they know he didn't do shit before that and won't do shit afterwards. Japanese fans come to see a WWE show, not here's your homeland token. They know who Kenta (now Hideo) is. Calling him by his real name or stage name not going to make a difference. How he's treated year round does. Which WWE is doing great right now. I find so deliciously ironic is that all the dirt sheet reports for the past couple of years paint Triple H has the savior and protector of the IWC after spending about a decade making him Satan Incarnate. There is a definite narrative of Vince being super out of touch and Hunter the hippest man in the room. But once he insert himself back into angles, the mood changes. They think that about HHH because he has provided tangible evidence via his running of NXT that he has the superior booking mindset. I myself have been as hard on in-ring Hunter as anyone, but since taking on his new respective roles, his efforts have been excellent and productive, unlike Vince whose RAW has been a stale sack of shit. The differences speak for themselves. That's what I currently judge him on. As for the KENTA/Hideo thing, WWE business in Japan is not very good. At all. The majority of the country's wrestling fans actually prefer their own traditional Puro style, so Hunter's idea to incorporate one of their own, as is, into the WWE umbrella is a much smarter business move than creating some novelty character just part of their traveling circus. WWE's approach has not worked in Japan as is. So branding a national star, much like UFC does with their own international talent, or Bulldog was in the 90's for WWF, is a far better move. I would actually like to see wwe sign more wrestlers with various styles of wrestling like lucha, strong style, etc. Have an unwritten/ untold division. They have 3 hours of raw why not showcase 3 styles of wrestling with entertainment sprinkled in.

I'm glad HHH is on creative and not posting here, cause I swear to God we would have to ban him in a day. He'd be the most stereotypical smark that ever lived.

They'll drop the second name eventually anyway.
Thus making "HIDEO" even more non-descript.

That could help out those wwe grown guys to work different styles. Its like the whole world in wwe's hands.

Vince...change it, damnit!
Kevin Dunn...aw, just name him Jim. No last name, no reason. Just...Jim.

But fans in Japan who don't watch WWE wont know he's there because it wont say KENTA in any reports. It will say Hideo Itami. So basically changing his name causes potential new viewers in Japan to have to rely on word of mouth to know he's in WWE.

The name itself isn't bad. It's the fact that WWE publicly choosing what they will call their workers is another way of them screaming from the rooftops that wrestling is fake.
