a million dollars-it doesn't happen that often and who knows, it could have been someone passing through-the winner hasn't stepped forward.
I'm a little annoyed though with the people that have taken to facebook in my area-one in particular who mentioned that they hoped the person could use it and also hoped that they were willing to give some of the money to the community.
I'm sure a lot of people would probably give some money away, but hell, some stranger just kind of volunteered them to do something that really isn't their concern.
Call it shaming I guess.
Do you automatically feel it's your duty to give some money away if you actually won the lottery, depending on how much you actually won?

The amount of money I won would definitely dictate how much I gave to charities.
As for the community....f*** that. My local community is full of arseholes, they wouldn't get one penny of my money.

Hell no, you're not obligated to give it to your community. If you have a community cause you're passionate in, then sure, give them a chunk. But it's your money, whether you want to give it away, horde it, or spend it all on a 6 foot tall statue of Shaq's wang. And anyone who tries to shame someone into giving their money away deserves no benefit from it, that's not what charity is.

I give to charity anyway, so if I won some $, I'm sure I'd donate some amount somewhere just by my nature.
That said, giving is no one's 'duty', it's just a cool thing to do.

Plus, it's "only" a million dollars. Taxes will take a sizable chunk out of it and then, unless you manage it properly, it would be very easy to use it all up.

If I WANT to give money to my community or to a charity, I'll do so, but don't guilt me for spending my money 'wrong'. I could also guarantee that all of those people trying to shame the lottery winner into doing 'right' wouldn't give two shits about the community if they won themselves.

(Myself, I'm a giving person, so I'd give the right amount to what I deem worthy. Even if I happen to win one of those mega-jackpots and I completely disappear from civilization entirely.)

Is it just me or is the lotto almost always won by people who have no idea how to manage moolah?

Is it just me or is the lotto almost always won by people who have no idea how to manage moolah? Go to your local corner store or minimart, any place where the main source of income is lotto tickets, cigarettes and the occasional candy bar. Look at the people on the line buying lotto tickets. Really study them closely. Now imagine that these people just won a huge jackpot, $200 million, $300 million, $500 million, whatever. Now try to imagine what these people would do with this money. If you can imagine them doing anything other then buying $500 million in more lottery tickets then you're fooling yourself. To the average person on the street winning the lotto is an easy means to fulfilling their goals in life. To the average person actually playing the lotto winning the lotto is their goal in life. Not only do they not know how to manage it but they have no idea what to actually do with it.

Not only do they not know how to manage it but they have no idea what to actually do with it. I sometimes go in on a lotto pool at my job, and every now and then may get a ticket myself. But for the most part I really have no interest because the odds are so astronomical. If, by some miracle, I ever did win a lotto jackpot of a substantial amount, I'd probably look at opening a restaurant or even, of all things, a funeral home.

I can't stand it when someone tries to guilt someone else into giving to charity. It's no ones business how much some one else gives to charity.

If I get a bunch of money like that I only feel like it's my duty to repay people I actually owe. I certainly do not feel obligated to give it to any charity, but that's not to say I wouldn't.

f*** that. If I won the Lotto, I would first pay off all my debts and give some money to my family. I'd buy a brand new car, paid in full. Then I would look in to donating some money to what I thought were worthwhile causes.
