To me, it's quality of reigns over quantity.
While CM Punk hasn't had very many reigns, quite a few were somewhat decent length reigns. And of course, 434 days. Longest reigning WWE Champion in the past 25 years.
I'm hoping Daniel Bryan will get another decent reign as Champion.

As far as I'm concerned, none of Cena's titles really count.

Ric Flair has 23 world titles between NWA, WCW, and WWE. So I say we wait until Cena hits 23 to riot. Plus as we know, Brock is going to destroy Cena-mania once again this Sunday!

What if he does? Seriously, THIS SHIT IS ALL FAKE. THESE GUYS ARE WINNING FAKE BELTS. How could anybody possibly get a tiny bit upset that a guy won more make-believe belts than someone else? Like, I understand being passionate but that's when it's time to check your priorities in life. While I don't particularly care if Cena ties or even breaks the record, the idea that you shouldn't care because the belts are fake seems like a pretty lame reason. I mean all of wrestling is "fake", so going by your logic, it's a waste of time to care about anything that happens on the show. Telling someone not to care about titles simply because it's fake is no better than those Youtube commenters that are always mocking wrestling fans by telling them that none of it is real. Not really since that's not the point I was making. It's perfectly fine to care about wrestling because it's entertainment. Discussing wrestling is no more ridiculous than discussing stuff like Dr. Who. To get legit angry at a guy breaking a record as if these were real athletic competitions and actually determined any measure of skill or talent is really silly to me. If you don't like Cena and just don't want to see him with the belt anymore, fine. If you just think Cena doesn't "deserve" to break the record, that's ridiculous. None of this is real. Nobody "deserves" to win any of these belts because the results are pre-determined. It's all entertainment, it's not a legitimate sport. From a purely objective standpoint, Cena is every bit as deserving as Flair.

If its any consolation to those of you offended by Cena equalling and breaking Ric Flair's record, I think it will always be regarded as a lesser achievement than Flair's due to the modern trend of passing the belt around like a hot potato and having two World title belts within the same company.

I don't think I would get mad, f*** it John's been on top for 10 years in a row, except Bruno and Hulk, idk if anyone can claim that. He deserves it, I think more than anything I'm gonna be amused that the "Ruck Fules" guy is gonna be considered the best of all time. Ric would actually be happy that John breaks his record, because they're hitting the bar later and John's buying the drinks.

At my house, Captain America was a 42 time Heavyweight champion of the Secret Wars/Super Powers/GI Joe federation.

From a purely objective standpoint, Cena is every bit as deserving as Flair. Winning titles is part of the entertainment that is wrestling. If it weren't, there'd be no need for championships at all. I don't see how people getting upset over the number of title reigns a superstar's getting is any different than not liking how much of a push a superstar's getting, or how a superstar seems to be getting more wins than another. It's all fake after all. Also having so many titles reigns also means a lot more than the simple fact that he's breaking a record. It signifies how much he's been in the title scene over the last several years. That combined with the fact that he's been doing it while playing this stale character that refuses to change for about 10 years now, then yeah, I can see why some wouldn't like the idea of it. Though with me personally, if I had such a problem with Cena being so dominant that it would be my main reason for being done with WWE, I would have stopped watching well before Cena came even close to beating Flair's record.

People should really care about how many titles that Cena has won about as much as they should care about how many title reigns that Rocky Balboa had. Wrestling at it's core is storytelling, that's really what should be discussed, whether the story in relation to the title reigns were good. I mean should anyone really be mad that a scrub like Zack Ryder has more titles in the WWE than someone like Jake the Snake?

You get invested in it long enough to suspend your disbelief during the course of the story; but getting hung up on make believe statistics is a lil weird.

I'm not really concerned about it. A rather large number of his title reigns were bullshit reigns anyway so the actual number of lengthy runs as champion would be pretty low.

Hell, the last couple of Flair's WCW title wins were lousy as hell, so I really can't get wound up about this.
As said it's what you do with them that are more important, and Cena's unlikely to gain much from his 16th if he gets there than he's already set with his 15. By this point it really is just a number - the point's been made.

He'll catch it eventually. One thing that Flair has and I'm sort of surprised they don't bring this up is that I believe he's the only man in history to have ever been NWA, WCW, and WWE World Champion. Kurt Angle did it too. And actually kind of surprised Kevin Nash didn't. Nah, the NWA pulled their titles from TNA right before then how where Kurt won his first TNA title. As for Cena, I welcome him getting the record, sometime in the distant future.

Well as far as I'm concerned if I company has two world titles, they actually have zero world titles. Cena's a one time world champion in my mind.

The only thing figure I had was this giant twelve inch tall inflatable Thing. While he looked cool, he couldn't compete in the Fed cuz of the size differences/weight class. Cap's biggest win was pinning Darkseid in best two out of three falls to regain the title he'd lost earlier in the year.

Just remembered my G.I Joe wrestling federation, weirdly enough Kano from Mortal Kombat was my world champion.
Man they're all fake, but even a toy championship holds a special place in your heart. Same with Flair's record, breaking it just ends another part of my childhood, one was lost when the streak was over.

He will be at least a 20 time champion before it's all said and done. Probably more like 30.

Had he not retired, I dread to think how inflated Edge's tally would've gotten. None of his reigns were particularly long either. Cena at least has ten years of being WWE champion and the marquee star. Frankly, I've always hated Flair so it wouldn't bother me at all. same here , never cared for Flair at all. Cena is going to have 25 runs by the time he's done which IMO is another 7-8 years
