Vortexx will air for the last time and Saturday Morning Cartoons on network television will be all but dead... we had a good run, but it still kinda sad to think. Yes, there's still Cartoon Network and Nick and Disney Channel, but not having any decent cartoons on a non cable channel sucks major ass.

In a way this really is the end of one of TV's longest eras. Saturday morning kid blocks were a stable of TV back to the earliest days. I myself feel kind of privileged to have lived through the times of the TGIF Saturday Morning Preview, and also the rivalry between Fox Kids and Kids WB.

I know this gets overplayed, but it works for this:
Ducktales Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers Cro Sonic the Hedgehog Wild West C.O.W.Boys of Moo Mesa Mega Man
And so many more from my childhood. Thanks for all the memories.

Saturday morning cartoons were a part of my childhood too, but dedicated kids blocks aren't really needed in an era with multiple cartoon channels and the internet. I'm surprised it lasted this long.

Yeah its kinda like when I hear a long running soap opera from the 1950s or before gets canceled. Sure I might not be watching right now but its kinda bums me out when an institution gets killed dead like that

Stuff you have to pay for... And the vast majority of Americans do pay for it in one form or another, so again, the era just doesn't really require it.

There has been decent cartoons on broadcast networks recently? The last good one I remember is Reboot. And that was what almost 20 years ago.

Honestly I wish this whole idea of "kids shows have to be educational" would die out already. I have heard of some parents who will not even let their kids watch Looney Tunes because there is not any eductional value in them. Kids are already spending more time in school as is (be it losing summer break or the school day being extended) so why not occasionally give them a break from learning and let them be entertained? If the thought process had always been "we have to teach a lesson" then many of the great Saturday morning cartoon shows would have likely never been done. I would say the last great kids cartoon was Animaniacs. Once in a while they would have some type of educational bit on there (though usually very quick) most of if though was about what a children's show should be and that is entertaining everyone. I guess there is nothing else for me to say but to post this.

I've logged onto Netflix on more than one Saturday morning in order to recapture some of that childhood magic, and for me it works. It's not the same thing, but like was said before, cable/on-demand/YouTube/etc. are making broadcast television irrelevant in more ways than one.
Still, for old times' sake:

Over the air networks have to air so many hours of EIC content each week.

There has been decent cartoons on broadcast networks recently? The last good one I remember is Reboot. And that was what almost 20 years ago. I'd even make the argument that there aren't many on cable channels now. (Really, all I watch from that is TMNT and the last of Beware the Batman, and that's on Adult Swim. And, well, the show is dead already anyway...) I'm kind of meh on this news, as SatAM has pretty much been a zombie for quite a while now, thanks to edutainment, as well as T-NBC and its clones, and corporate takeovers (ABC MUST have Disney programs, etc. etc.) All that was left was what was on the CW/WB, and that turned to crap especially in the 2000s, with mediocre reboots of DC properties, and the LOONATICS, for Gawd's sake! Vortexx was good for allowing me to discover Spectacular Spider-Man officially, but will always have the stigma of being the block that showed censored versions of shows from the earlier 2000s.

It bums me out to know that my daughter won't get to grow up with Saturday morning cartoons like I did. I loved getting up at 7 and channel surfing between Fox, CBS, and ABC. Just a real bummer.

You seem so young to me now because when I was a kid every network had a Saturday morning preview special. They had storylines and everything.

This bums me out. Waking up fixing some cereal or warming up pizza from the night before and watching as much as I could flip through was the best. These were the days where they would show wrestling sometimes towards 12:00pm to cap off the cartoons if you knew the station or had that in your area.
Then this was the time where you'd get Saturday matinee movies. Sometimes they would be scary movies, one of the Conan films, comedies like 48 Hrs or The Jerk, or one of the Superman flicks. Even better would be martial arts flicks.
You couldn't begin to f*** with that time period.
If all else failed you turn on the Sega or the Nintendo.
Those were the days.
