Yeah microsoft, just design a seperate OS for PCs and one for everything else. 8 was a clusterf*** while 7 is pretty great all around.

So, they're just admitting it'll suck by dodging how odd-numbered Windows are the good ones?

Should call it Windows X like Mega Man X in order to confuse people Considering Apple has been on the Mac OS X kick for what seems like centuries, I doubt they will. I mean 8 has some strong suits (ability to handle more RAM, and it being able to manage SSDs better than 7), but they were all buried under an interface that is not feasible as shipped. Especially on an enterprise level. Doubling down on the touchscreen ruling them all was fine with tablets, but that's all it is good for. Touch screen monitors are pretty much crap (yay! More finger smudges on my monitor), the convertible tablet/laptops are buggy POS, and All-In-Ones? Sweet crap. Working tech support you know how many older people I've had complain? Just put in a tutorial for the new UI to get people up to speed. Or have them be able to switch, fully, to the old UI.

Looking at the time where each OS was the "newest version" Windows XP - October 2001 Windows Vista - January 2007 (5 years and 3 months for XP) Windows 7 - October 2009 (2 1/2 years or so for Vista) Windows 8 - October 2012 (3 years for 7) Windows 10 - Late 2015 (3 years or so for 8) XP did last a fairly long time, but that was the exception to the rule. Win 95 to Win 98 was 3 years and Win 98 to Win Me was about 2 1/2 years. Win ME lasted barely a year because it was hot garbage. Vista was also pretty bad for a lot of the same reasons as ME, and Win 7 was basically "Windows Vista without the memory hogs and instability." Don't forget that many people didn't bother with Vista and just stuck with XP until 7 came out. Many small businesses still use xp because of old Office software and old pc's. Also alot of people simply didn't bother with Windows 8 and have stuck with 7. I include myself in that category.

Can't they just simply fix W8 before making another OS from scratch?

I heard for Windows 11 they're just going to sell old DVDs of The Net instead of actually developing a new os.

My dad's PC had Vista but he got a free upgrade to Win7 when it came out. I'm a lot more optimistic about W10 than I was about 8 at least.

Poor old George RR Martin
All this Windows 10 shit, and all he wants is decent word processing software.
I think he still writes all his novels using the Gutenberg press
