Should call it Windows X like Mega Man X in order to confuse people Then they release an updated Windows X-1 version. Only for the next version to be Windows 11.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Stop trying to make an OS that runs on all platforms. The mobile and desktop OS need to be separate. That's a very large reason why Win8 was so poorly received.

They should have called it Windows-X then called the next version Windows 10. They should add an Xbox One emulator to it so that you can play any downloaded Xbox One games on your PC easily.

T They should add an Xbox One emulator to it so that you can play any downloaded Xbox One games on your PC easily. I can pretty much guarantee this will NEVER happen.

That's the impression I got, though. They realized that Windows 8 was way too "all in one" to work for non-touchscreen PC's. So while W10 will have the same basic kernel across all versions, each version is tailored for specific platforms. Like the Desktop OS dumps the Modern/Metro UI to boot in the desktop mode, complete with a returning Start Button. It looks like there's Live Tiles in a sidebar in the Start Menu, but it doesn't take over the entire GUI like Win 8 did. They're also getting rid of the obnoxious Charms Bar. www.engadget.com/2014/09/30/microsoft-windows-10/ If you want to take a look at what it looks like. I'm pretty ok with this as it's basically a giant "Favorites/Pinned" bar without sacrificing the functionality and aesthetic appeal of a Taskbar and Start Menu. W10 is also (finally) adding Virtual Desktops, which is something that's been in Apple OSX and Linux distros for ages.

Computers and the internet make me sick. Sure, they're useful and fun to play with, but I'm really not digging how quick the turnaround on OS are anymore or how the internet wants every single thing you use and do to be connected to everything else you use and do. It's just not neccesary.
My heart goes out to you if you're in school, because there's another couple hundred of your dollars going right out the window for no real reason. Have fun navigating the "reimagined" word processing and spreadsheet programs you were perfectly comfortable with before.

the cycle for OS's hasn't really changed... windows 98 was the upgrade to Windows 95 after all and after that Windows Millenium Edition (or 2000 if you're like most who swapped to the NT systems due to how botched ME is)
not to mention many colleges buy licenses for software like this and the students can get it for free.
It's how I got a number of Microsoft products when I was still in school.
and it's an OS it's not exactly something that you will need to upgrade for X number of years until they discontinue support for whatever OS you are using, and they usually continue support for a rather extended period of time. (7 extended support is set to last until like 2020 that's 11 years of total support)

Looking at the time where each OS was the "newest version"
Windows XP - October 2001
Windows Vista - January 2007 (5 years and 3 months for XP)
Windows 7 - October 2009 (2 1/2 years or so for Vista)
Windows 8 - October 2012 (3 years for 7)
Windows 10 - Late 2015 (3 years or so for 8)
XP did last a fairly long time, but that was the exception to the rule. Win 95 to Win 98 was 3 years and Win 98 to Win Me was about 2 1/2 years. Win ME lasted barely a year because it was hot garbage. Vista was also pretty bad for a lot of the same reasons as ME, and Win 7 was basically "Windows Vista without the memory hogs and instability."

Didn't they announce windows 9 was going to be a free upgrade to 8?
I think they changed their mind on that one, so renamed it Windows 10 to avoid having to give it away

This one looks very good. I like some of the stuff I see on the pictures. I was hoping for gifs as desktops but oh well.

That's a significant improvement over Win8's GUI but I'm not entirely sold on it. What I don't understand is why most of the extra stuff isn't just an optional plugin. "Don't want the Live Tiles? Check YES for Live Tiles and NO for no Live Tiles. You can activate the Live Tiles at a later time if you want." Something like that would be great. It's kind of like UAC and how annoying that can be, but is extremely easy to just disable and forget about altogether.

"Windows 9" is essentially Windows 8.1, which I'm too lazy to take the time to upgrade from 8.
