Can someone tell me why the rest of the country has such a damn fascination with our foliage? I get that it looks pretty and all but does that justify making travel and vacation plans to come look at our trees? IT'S JUST LEAVES.

The nice part of me is saying "You just don't see it as anything special because you're around it all the time."
The normal part of me is saying "Hey, people are pretty stupid, man."

I'd never even heard of this as a thing until Family Guy made fun of it.

Because it's pretty and it's basically the last excuse for people living in a craphole city to drive north and see something colorful that's not manmade until the spring. The LaCrosse to Dubuque stretch of the Mississippi River will have countless motorcycles and cars on it from the first week in September until it's too cold to ride.
I live along a series of river bluffs by the Mississippi in that corridor and we get countless people traveling through the area during leaf season. They bring a ton of money and the locals enjoy it. Most of the travelers come from the Chicago-Milwaukee area or from the various cities in Iowa that have shitty scenery (Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo)
We enjoy the visitors.

Hey, we got pretty foliage down in southern Indiana.
But, you gotta realize that people like to see foliage because of the fact that it's pretty.

It doesn't take a nucular scientist to pronounce foilage.

It's a reason like anywhere else one would travel. Yes most states have color changing leaves but a lot of people like Photographers like the setting and look for it to get that amazing shot.

Having been born and raised in a rural part of Devon, where everything is green, I can honestly say I would become very depressed if I had to move to somewhere like London, Birmingham, or Manchester where everything is dirty and grey.

I'd never even heard of this as a thing until Family Guy made fun of it. Same here. And I live probably 10 miles from the general area (Cranston, RI, supposedly) where FAMILY GUY is set. Every so often, as I'm driving around back roads, I have a moment - more than a couple a season, actually - where I note how good the changing leaves look on trees along the road or out in a field. My usual view behind my house is not really good, and of course it's annoying when you're the one to have to clean up the leaves, but in other places it does look damn nice this time of the year...

I'm literally taking the red eye Friday night and will arrive in Boston Saturday morning for a week-long venture in New England. Plan on hitting up Cape Cod, New London, Brattleboro, Portsmouth and Portland. Was going to keep an eye out for foliage. Where should I go?

As someone who is moved by beauty in nature, I completely get it. There are few things more lovely, in my opinion, than the leaves changing colors.
If stuff like that doesn't speak to you, then chances are you're not going to understand it.

If you can make it in time Brookburns looks great as well.
Tna'brook is an old Indian forest just outside New London.
