I'll wait and see if Sam Smith will be able to pull it off. This isn't like when Adele was announced and I felt it was a perfect choice from the get go.
It can't be any worse than Madonna surely?

Now confirmed. It is Sam Smith. The Ellie bit was false.
Song is called "Writing's on the Wall" and will be released September 25th

Ugh, That theme song is so bad. Okay, it's not Madonna, but it's still f***ing awful. How did Sam Smith get popular by releasing basically the same song over and over again?

Not feeling it. Seems like a decent song, but I've never heard Sam Smith before and I'm finding his voice a little to high for the song. Needs either a female voice or a dude with a deeper voice. Definitely not feeling this song right now.

Listening to it now... and not really feeling it. Like The Summer of Muskrat XVII said the voice seems to high for it... it also seems really low energy.

I can't stand Sam Smith but the song is okay. The orchestra sounds really good and will fit in the film really well.
Honestly, I'm hugely relieved. He's been the front runner since last year and I'd been praying since then that it wouldn't be him; then he said it would be Ellie Goulding (I imagine a joke between friends) and I hate her even more than Smith so I didn't know how to feel when he was finally confirmed. Like most of his songs it'd be better if someone else was singing it, but it's not as whiny and forced as his vocals usually are.
I'm still let down that the Radiohead rumour turned out to be nothing (I wonder why that guy attempted to make that 15K bet though?) and I'll have to hope Lana Del Rey gets a chance next film.

Well this Sam Smith song sums up most of The Daniel Craig Bond Movies. It's boring, tons of "throwback", joyless, pretentious, and needlessly "pretty" where that substitutes substance. Then again Skyfall is a damn good song so maybe the opposite will happen.

What the hell song did YOU guys listen to? This is one of the best Bond themes I've heard in a long time.
The strings in the orchestra give it an old school classic movie vibe, like a 007 theme you'd hear in a 60's movie or something. And Smith's delivery and the lyrics are clearly trying to get into the emotional aspect of the normally cold blooded Bond, just as Craig has tried to explore with the character at certain points.

It's so-so for me. It really does sound a lot like "Earth Song". It has a great build but it doesn't really go anywhere. Quite a meandering song. I hate the falsetto. It's quite downbeat but that might work if it's Daniel Craig's last movie. I don't like that the title of the film isn't in the song. "Spectre" could have easily been added, even just a reference in the verse. The orchestral bits were lush though. They sound very Bond-ish. May have sounded better with a woman singing it. As much as I hate her, Lana Del Rey may have been a better choice. I'd have picked Sia to do this song. I'm sure it will sound better in the film though.

and now MY thoughts on it as i've listened to it seven times in a row
now a bit of background on the previous craig bond themes
YOU KNOW MY NAME - UTTERLY BRILLIANT ANOTHER WAY TO DIE - unappreciated SKYFALL - wasn't a fan of adele, but this one grew on me
and most importantly i could SING them ..... now i can do a falsetto, but sam smith's falsetto is unusual as he doesn't project it as powerfully as some others do ..... and that's the overriding DOWNFALL of the song! in one part is almost sounds like he has a lisp, and yes it can be slightly difficult to hear the lyrics clearly enough, and in the falsetto parts the orchestral tones down to let the audience hear it .....
and the end ..... just ends ..... DEAD! should have had the orchestral drums rumbling at the end, over the very last word!
his overall voice is NOT powerful enough, it's it all to inconsistent too to sing a bond THEME ..... but this is NOT A BOND THEME!!!
it's a BOND LAMENT!
it feels very personal to the character, like SKYFALL did, and like adele i'm not a fan of sam smith. AND because of the pace of the whole song even i think this WOULDN'T have been suitable for elle goulding either! it's too slow .....
parts are NOT good, the falsetto, the first part of the second verse, the overall low-ish tone to it .....
but get this folks, there are VERY GOOD PARTS of it
the first part is beautifully done, very breathy and a lot of feeling the orchestral's are great, those sliding strings are fantastic "if i risk it all ... could you break my fall" might be the best whole part of the song "as the stars begin to gather ... and the light begins to fade" is another STAND OUT part!!! the double chorus and the instrumental break is damn fine
the song does need help from another voice ..... GEORGE EZRA could have made a lot of difference to it, duetting with the title lyrics .....
i was trying to place it with previous bond themes, initially it sounded like FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, but couldn't quite picture it ..... then it hit me! the strings sounded oriental, like bonds' arrival at the casino in SKYFALL, or more obtrusively YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE!
it's because it doesn't have that bassic feel to it that a lot of you are dismissive, and sam smith's voice can be quite caustic, and with some tweaking (definitely needs some deep rumble drums) it could have been ..... powerful ..... but shys away from it and it becomes what i said at the start it was .....
a lament for james bond!
.....
hopefully not though, i want my big booming instrumental for the 25th theme now who has the broccoli's phone number?

In the film I imagine it will sound deeper. The pace of the song will also quicken. That might help.

There was a recent interview where Daniel Craig himself commented on how outdated and chauvinistic the Bond character can come off in modern times, so Smith's "sensitive" approach to this new theme is maybe at least a sign the franchise is willing to evolve. Of course he's still going to romance women and kill a bunch of bad guys, but I think it works.

I think the chauvinism element is overstated. Connery's 007 was, but that was the 60's. Moore to a certain extent. I don't think Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan were.

Yeah, "License to Kill" and "The World Is Not Enough" particularly tap into that 'emotional Bond' element

I don't like Sam Smith at all but was willing to give the song a chance. It's awful and full of the usual Sam Smith warbling. Florence Welch can get away with this but Sam Smith just can't pull it off. It just sounds like he's trying to show off the whole damn song. What a wet blanket.
Skyfall by Adele (who I also don't like more because of the music rather than her voice) I hated and heard on the radio way too much to the point I got massively sick of it. Once I saw Skyfall though and the opening credits it clicked for me do hopefully this will as will.
