I'm in a weird position where I like his songs, but his voice annoys the crap outta me.
Am I in the minority here? What do you think of ol' grown up Charlie Brown as a singer?

Yes. It's oddly comforting. Now excuse me while I listen to 1979 over and over again because I feel the need to be comforted

I think it's one of the best voices in music history, much in the same way Syd Barrett and Bowie and Gruff Rhys can only ever be themselves, Corgan's half singing, half growling voice puts over the emotion of the vocal melodies better than any pure singer ever would with the same lyric sheet.
Now, I'm going to play along to Soma & Thru The Eyes of Ruby and zone out into a world of wonderful instrumental layering.
EDIT: I do know what you mean though, I still can't tolerate listening to the Smiths, half due to Moz's singing voice, and half due to the horrible production on every album, and another mystical half on the dull songwriting tropes that were already dull in 1982. This has led to many an argument with fellow engineers in the past. McCarthy did political socially responsible songwriting better and deserve all the praise the Smints got. /end ramble

wouldn't sound like Pumpkins without his nasally caterwauling. great example of a guy whose not a very good singer but his voice defines his band. kinda like Geddy Lee. Ozzy Osbourne-era Black Sabbath too. or Lee Dorian in Cathedral (for the more Metal-conscious of you).

His voice is perfect for the type of music that is Smashing Pumpkins. While I admit I am not the biggest Smashing Pumpkin fan, on the other hand, they do have some songs that I enjoy a lot. "Disarm" has to be one of my favorite songs by them, along with "Tonight, Tonight", the one from Batman and Robin, and "Zero".

I enjoy his voice alot, hes not a bad little singer. people dont give him enough credit as a guitarist though, he is an incredible guitarist and a hell of a songwriter. I will say as the voice goes though some songs it sound better than others...like the studio version of "tonight tonight" i dont care for his voice too much on chorus wise, however "Ava Adore" he is amazing on!!!
also had a great privilege of talking to him about singing as a musician singer/songwriter i had met him and asked him any advice on keeping your voice in tact and he was mega open and took me aside so its just me and him to talk about it. basically he doesnt go full out at rehearsals but he will practice for a long time as to build up stamina vocally, and day of a show he will eat potato chips and drink hot tea with honey, also suggested those propel zero waters as a great thing to basically avoid sugars a week before a show.

Siamese Dream was my absolute jam back in the day to the point where even though Billy Corgan does sound like a cheese grater to the eardrums, I still can't hate.

Nope, and I've always thought Smashing Pumpkins were among the overrated 90s bands that people seem to absolutely love.

I love how he can go from a scream to a whisper, or vice versa, and it sounds completely natural to the point where you barely even notice.

I'll second the notion that, while he isn't that great of a singer, his voice fits the style of the band. That said, I'm just not that huge a fan of Smashing Pumpkins. I can count on one hand the number of Pumpkins songs that I like.

I like it. I'm more into his guitar sounds than his voice (Big Muff π FTW), but it's the whole thing, really, isn't it?
It's kinda odd to hear the band pre-Gish in the late-80's (one of my favourite eras of the band, check out the bootlegs, demos on recent reissues etc), where the whine hadn't fully formed yet:
You can hear the beginnings of it, but he sounds a little different compared to the voice you hear on Gish.

His voice is great, one of the best rock vocalists of the 90's. I just wish Smashing Pumpkins weren't so hit or miss for me.
I know what the op means though. Dream Theater would probably be my favorite band if I didn't hate James LaBries voice so much.

Dream Theater would probably be my favorite band if I didn't hate James LaBries voice so much. Whilst I don't disagree that LaBries voice can be annoying at times. It's still a shit ton better than their original vocalist Charlie Dominici He made the "Qhen Dream and Day unite" album almost unbearable. Ytse jam was the best song simply cause it was instrumental. ------- Also I really enjoy Billy Corgans voice
