What was their purpose? Was it to build Jeff Jarrett as a contender for Austin but it bombed? How were they introduced? Why did they suck so much?

I think it was just another "throw it at the wall and see if it sticks" idea. apparently everyone involved thought it was terrible.

Could have went somewhere if it consisted of more than just Jarrett, Cornette, and the 'Heavenly' Bodies.

It did lead to the hilariously ironic "There's all the great wrestlers in the world... and then there's me!" from ol' Double J, so there's that...

Vince was desperate to defeat WCW, and was willing to align with other promotions at the time to do it. ECW? Check. Smoky Mountain? Check. USWA? Check. NWA? Sure, why not?
Although I admit I was confused because I was a newer fan at the time, and my best friend who was a smark had told me NWA became WCW so I didn't understand at the time why there were still NWA guys.

Vince pretty much gave it the go ahead to shut Cornette up, and maybe hoped it could replicate what WCW had been doing with the NWO.

Had Austin already hooked up with Debra at that point? Was his dislike for Jarrett before that? He ran his in ring ability down at one point, said he he didn't hit the ropes hard enough to break an egg. Between that & the fact that Vince Russo wasnt going to book them as a strong group, they were doomed. Could have been pretty cool if it had panned out.

Jarrett's "great wrestler" character was how he redebuted in November '97. The NWA stuff didn't happen until the following spring. Russo meant it as a rib on the NWA/Cornette, but Cornette wound up turning Russo's rib into not only free promotion for the NWA, but a legit payday for some of his friends.

I unashamedly love stuff like this about the Attitude era even if it was a joke/failure in most people's eyes, random factions/returns like this made watching so much more interesting than now.

Here's how it was introduced.
Jim Cornette would be given some time on Raw to give promos about the state of wrestling. He said that today's wrestling isn't what it used to be. He said he would bring back real wrestling. These led to the NWA stable. There was Rock n' Roll Express, Tommy Young as a referee, Dennis Coralluzzo as a representive, Jeff Jarrett. Eventually Barry Windham joined them after he turned on Bradshaw. Bart Gunn and Bob Holly formed the new Midnight Express. Dan Severn would also come in later.
The angle never really got over.

I kind of liked it even though it failed, just because I like anything against the grain in wrestling. The misses can be as interesting as the hits, and either is worse than the same old thing over and over again. I mean if you're watching RAW, you do not expect to see this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdYOzrSFwxw

I always thought it was an idea to build up a group of "traditionalists" to feud with Austin or DX.

I always thought it was an idea to build up a group of "traditionalists" to feud with Austin or DX. It would've been neat if McMahon aligned with the NWA faction and prided them as true champions ready to bring tradition back to WWF.

Even better, it would've been cool if Flair somehow got out of his contract and showed up in the WWF to feud with Austin.
