If this happens at WrestleMania, would the crowd finally cheer for the downfall and first defeat of Rusev or would they still boo Cena?
It would really suck if he got booed despite doing something the general audience has been waiting to see for months on the grounds that...well he's Cena. And I'm not even talking about the whole "New guy should beat Rusev" thing considering there's no one really right now who makes much sense considering Swagger already lost, I mean in terms of the "We always boo Cena because he sucks at life" crowd.

People would cheer Rusev over Cena at 'Mania.
As a large amount of fans aren't from the US (maybe the majority next year for all we know), as a large amount of fans from the US & outside don't care about current world events in wrestling, and because Cena is a pathetic inconsistency in-terms of character, he'd get booed and Rusev would either get cheered for hitting Cena, or mild indifference/celebration for a win...
Building to a USA vs Russia thing in the current political climate at an event people from all over the world fly to, expecting people to cheer Cena? The WWE would be absolute clowns if they thought Cena'd be popular.

It'll really be like Rocky IV, except the crowd won't start cheering Rocky halfway through.

Rusev's been doing a good job maintaining heat, so I think it could go over well. I do think Roman vs Rusev would be a much, much smarter idea, but I do think that the match would probably be pretty good and work, and that'd contribute to fans getting into it more. That said, a lot of this depends on how douchey or not the lead up would be.

People will cheer Cena's opponent over Cena at every televised event you'll see from now until he retires.

If Angle gets medically cleared, he should beat Rusev.

I am planning to start a 'Rusev CRUSH' chant at WM31. I hope it does not turn into a Rusev sucks chant. Maybe we can get a Rusev Mashka chant as well.

The match will be something, but I for one cannot wait for the 3-4 weeks of hilarious photoshops of Rusev as a baby and Lana as an old Russian villager.

Cena hypothetically getting booed against Rusev should act as a wake up call to the company that the character has to be tweaked, and certain aspects outright removed. If he cannot get a hero's reaction against a universally hated foe, that means he can never, as is, fit into a hero narrative again, and they should never attempt to do so. People have many legit, logical reasons for why they boo him. It's time those issues were addressed with the same seriousness as those that keep him as is are.

we're 23 weeks out from Wrestlemania, does anybody really think Rusev will still be relevant by then? there's not much left on the roster to feed him.

Cena is booked as the biggest heel in the company, he'll get booed against anybody.

I'd like to know why Russev was given such a push by beating everyone while Bray was not.

They don't seem to have taken anything from Rollins being nothing but booed for months and then the crowd suddenly switching to a, "Thank you, Rollins!" chant the second he laid out Cena.

Of course Cena would get cheered over Rusev. There would be a huge Lets go Cena Cena Sucks chants, a few super smarky people will be full on anti Cena but most will cheer Cenas move clap encouragement when he is in the Camel Blutch and cheer like crazy when he makes him tap out to the STF. Now if it was the Raw after Mania it would be a different story.

His level of giving a damn about his results is exactly inverse and opposite to our level of giving a damn about his results.

The only way they can have Rusev get booed over Cena is if he pulls some really harsh anti America bits, and I doubt they will do that.
