There's gonna always be a sharp decrease in exclusive last gen titles once all the new generation systems have come out. You have to remember, the first year and a half is crunch time for new systems as that's the time when you need to show what the next gen can do... so the main focus for developers is to work with the new systems. Not saying last gen can't and won't have awesome games coming out for it for a few years now, but more companies are going to start shying away from that system.... at least with their major releases.
Just because a new generation is upon us, doesn't mean the last generation is dead and gone though. And this isn't a new thing either.... Little Samson came out at the end of the NES life cycle, and that's an amazing game. Both God Of War 1 and 2 as well as Shadow Of The Colossus came out when most people were looking towards the next generation...
So yeah, no.... the last generation isn't finished. But, the focus is shifting towards the next generation.

I've still got PS2 going strong. It's mostly my dvd player sure, but regardless.

I think it's still going but we are in the transition of the passing of the guard. Give it another year or two once the new systems drop in price and then everyone can afford them.

Why wouldn't it be dead? It's the last generation. What game designer wouldn't want to be tinkering with the new shit rather than the old shit? Because, not everyone has several hundred dollars to throw down on a new system, especially if they still see value in the old system. PS2 was still selling plenty of games well past the point in which they shouldn't have. Hell, with the exception to the PS2 and Wii, I have always waited a year or two to upgrade, since I've learned that many late release games are still very very good. Well obviously, I don't have the money for a new console either, I was more speaking from the perspective of the game designers.

It will be supported as long as it's profitable, so I'm guessing almost 5 years more, 3 at least.

I really have nothing to add to the conversation, but after seeing your sig I feel like taking the dust out of my Warlock Of Firetop Mountain (and the rest of my books from that series, while we're at it).

I don't want to be a condescending arsehole but since moving to PC back in January I would never go back to a console... Totally with you all the way here. I will always have a computer that can play all kinds of games, so why do I wanna get a library of games for a console that'll be extinct in a couple years anyway? A story aside, but still relevant: I remember the "richie rich" in my high school bought a PS2 the day it came out for $750. That was...1997-98, I think? That price was just ludicrous to us back then. I have a PS2, first generation, that still works- I just re-re-replayed Kingdom Hearts on it (and holy crap, that dialogue). I bought it I think 2 or 3 years after it came out for $80? Maybe less. This past summer, I went to Gamestop to pick up a cheap PS3 since PS4 is out. $250. WHY???

I expected this to happen fast with this generation. It took a long time for a new console generation to come out, and if you were listening to gaming podcasts and reading interviews with developers they were screaming for new hardware for a few years now.

The PS3 remains King in this house. The deep franchise modes in games like Madden, NCAA Football, NBA and MLB games will keep me entertained on the last generation consoles for a few more years to come. By that time I'll pick up a PS4 without paying a fortune in the process.

It will be supported as long as it's profitable, so I'm guessing almost 5 years more, 3 at least. Pretty much. Hell, new PS2 releases were still happening in 2013, so as long as there's money to be made from the last generation new games will continue to be released.

The only one I wanted was EA Sports MMA. Which I found to be stupid that they didn't make it for the last gens.
Otherwise, nothing making me want an Xbox One or PS4 yet.
