I'm curious as to how he commentates without someone from the E in his ear after all this time. But, Jim Ross was actually the best play-by-play man in wrestling before he became "Good Ol' JR", the cliche-spouting successor to Gorilla Monsoon. He called WCW Japan Supershow in '91, and I thought he did just fine. Then again, I was completely new to puroresu, so perhaps my expectations were low. I thought he did a fine job of relating the event to an English speaking audience, and I see no reason why he couldn't do the same thing again. It's not WWE, and I seriously doubt he would be talking about BBQ sauce or scalded dogs. He's become even more slow-speaking and monotonous since he's left WWE, let alone 23 years ago. Listen to him on Colt's Art of Wrestling podcast and just yikes. I legit love Colt's style and I'm a huge fan of JR so I was really interested in anything he'd have to say and yet I had to force myself to not shut off the podcast. It was an informal setting and JR was given free reign to speak as he wanted to and it was still just shockingly bad. It's like JR has a thought in his head and tries to convey it, does a mediocre job of doing so, and shuts out any comment from anyone else around him while he repeats himself over and over until he's satisfied. The end result being only slightly less mediocre than if he had only said it once. I would have been sad by the end of it if I wasn't so relieved that it was over.

I've listened to his podcast a few times and I thought he did fine. Yeah, he talked slower and took more time, but I just attributed this to the fact that it was his show and he had all the time he wanted to express his point. I'll take your word for it that he was "shockingly bad" on the Art of Wrestling podcast. Now if this thing with him calling the New Japan PPV turns out to be true, I'll be interested to see how it turns out.

Just having New Japan with English commentary so I can understand the storylines better would be good enough for me. JR is just a nice bonus treat if they get him. But if it actually happens it will no doubt make the Jan 4 show an even bigger deal than usual, at least to most American fans.
Also, this seems to point to GFW actually starting up soon, which Im very curious about.

Now if this thing with him calling the New Japan PPV turns out to be true, I'll be interested to see how it turns out. Oh for sure, his show is one thing, but a live PPV with guys like Kota Ibushi and the Bucks is another thing entirely. Ross has issues getting his point across and stubbornly refuses to move on from the subject until he is pleased that he's done so. He gets 90% of his point across in the first pass-through, but has to make 4 or 5 more and still doesn't seem to quite get it to 100. That may be fine (and definitely understandable considering his age and what he's gone though), and he's earned the time it takes him, but I can't see it working for a junior heavyweight match. Again, JR's the all-time best. A legend. He's just a methodical talker now who talks in circles and stumbles over his words when pressed. That's not what we want for fast-paced action. His own, structured podcast is absolutely the best thing for him.

As long as he calls someone a bastard or son of a bitch, it will be worth the money.

Looks like the Reddit guy knew what he was talking about. It was announced this morning that JR IS calling the PPV.

Man, JR must've received one hell of a pay day for this.

I'll be home during this, which is great because I was already planning on watching Wrestle Kingdom anyway. I wonder who they'll get as a colour guy?

While I'm happy for getting NJPW getting some English commentary I REALLY wish Jarrett and JR weren't involved.

I hope JR does his homework. He probably will. I can remember when Jim Ross didn't seem too knowledgable about the Japanese wrestlers when he announced WCW PPVs with Japanese wrestlers and when WWE brought in Great Sasake.

Its good that this will give GFW the rub from New Japan, since I think NJPW is at least the second biggest wrestling company in the world. I just hope when GFW breaks off into its own that they aren't TNA light. I also hope when the glamor of tossing their name on a NJPW show is gone they aren't left performing in nearly empty arenas.

they should have just let AJ to hold the title until the dome show. would have boosted buys in NA with the inclusion of JR and provided a great match in the ME too (not that Tana/Okada won't, i have seen it umpteen times)
