The opening game on Sunday Night Baseball for the 2015 season on April 5th will be the Chicago Cubs hosting the St. Louis Cardinals, the first time Wrigley Field has ever hosted the opening game of the entire season.

Mike Trout won the AL MVP. Interesting note is that Felix Hernandez finished above Corey Kluber in MVP voting, despite Kluber winning the Cy Young. Your AL ROY, Jose Abreu, finished 4th, appearing on 27 of 30 ballots.

Braves acquired RHP Arodys Vizcaino and international signing bonus slots #2, #3 and #4 from Cubs for INF Tommy La Stella and international signing bonus slot #4. The Cubs now have La Stella, Alcantara, Russell, Baez, and Castro among their middle infield and they're all pretty much ready. Trade has to be coming soon. Heyman reporting that the Padres are interested in Sandoval. That's an odd fit.

Diamondbacks acquired RHP Jeremy Hellickson from the Rays for OF Justin Williams and SS Andrew Velazquez. Dave Stewart called him a #2-#3 starter. Dave stewart is probably reading old Baseball America back issues. He's only 27 years old and he's moving from the American League East to the National League West. In those cavernous parks and facing lineups with only eight legitimate hitters, Jeremy Hellickson could very easily be a serviceable second- or third-starter for Arizona. He dealt with injuries almost all of 2014, and prior to that, he was a very effective arm for the Rays, accruing a 3.70 ERA in 95 starts. And it's not like Arizona traded away its entire farm system to acquire Hellickson. Justin Williams and Andrew Velazquez could turn out to be perfectly decent major leaguers, but they don't have that sure-thing label attached to them, and they're both borderline top-10 prospects in Tampa Bay's system.

Too bad Heyward sucks now. People thought he'd be better than Buster Posey.

The deal making me wonder if the Cards are in on Scherzer like I thought. That or Wacha and Garcia are both expected to be healthy. That and he stole 20 bases last season which we need more often.

I've been a die-hard Braves fan all of my life. It hurts me to say this, but...
f*** you, Braves. I hope Heyward absolutely destroys them every time he plays them. What exactly do they have left on the roster?
- Freddie Freeman is as overrated as you can get. He's good for maybe half a season and then he's garbage. - Andrelton Simmons is a god defensively, god awful offensively.
Those are basically the two remaining decent players and they're not even that good. Not to f***ing mention BJ UPTON remains on the roster. The only thing that can save the Braves is if Ted Turner somehow owns the team once again.
Sigh. At least Heyward gets to go to a competent, winning team.

Huge trade just happened. Jason Heyward and Jordan Walden to St. Louis for Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins. A few years ago, this trade would have rattled the baseball world. Jason Heyward was the consensus best prospect in baseball back in 2010 and Shelby Miller was widely-regarded as one of the most can't-miss pitching prospects prior to the 2011 season. It's funny what a few years of reality can do, which is why I try not to glue myself too much to prospects. For every Buster Posey, who is labeled as can't miss and fulfills his expectations, there's a million Heywards or Millers. Don't get me wrong, it's not like Heyward or Miller are useless, but they're serviceable, easily-replaceable talents, which is something nobody expected them to be. Heyward prior to 2010 was regarded as "All-Star right field prototype, a la Dave Winfield or Dave Parker," by MLB.com. Miller prior to 2011 was called "Just a bullet-throwing robot out there," by Baseball Prospectus. Also, $82 million over five years for RUSSELL MARTIN?

Jason Heyward had a 6.3 WAR last year. That's a lot better than "serviceable, easily-replaceable." I mean, unless the expectations of him were "superstar, perennial MVP candidate." But he's a solid offensive player and a fantastic defensive player.

Depends on how much stock you put in DWar. To me not much as it's based too much in opinion and not enough in stats.
Either way his OWar of 2.8 and OPS+ of 108 puts him in at slightly above average, and like was said he's an excellent defender.
But yeah if the Cards don't think they have a shot at a front line FA starter, I don't get this trade too much.

So it's a 6 year/$150 million deal, which is a bargain. He also got the opt out and no trade clause. Buster Olney says 98% of execs think the Marlins are nuts, but I guarantee you those same people would kill to make a deal like this. The sticker shock is the money and years. But Arod signed back to back 10 year deals for over half a billion dollars. Would it appease people if the Marlins just broke it down into two separate contracts?
