Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics are close to a "very significant deal" involving Jeff Samardzija. As are the Braves and White Sox, apparently. I'd love for the White Sox to get him. Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, and Rodon? Yes please.

White Sox prospect Tim Anderson tweeted something that seemed to indicate he was traded to Oakland and quickly deleted it. No confirmation though.

Is there a reason the A's are blowing up the team? Billy Beane finally said "f*** it!"?

A lot of people still defending Beane I will attempt to do the same: - Brett Lawrie is four years younger than Josh Donaldson and has still not yet his ceiling at the plate or as a defender. - Kendall Graverman skyrocketed through the Jays' system last season and is way ahead of schedule in his development. - Sean Nolin has a killer change-up and a very good K/BB ratio. - Franklin Barreto is an amazing athlete, shined in the Appalachian League as an 18-year-old and makes up for the loss of Addison Russell. That said, as a Jays fan, I'm thrilled with the acquisition of Josh Donaldson. He's going to be playing in a hitter's park for the first time in his career and will be afforded protection one way or another if it's Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion. He's also a fine defender and makes up for the loss of Lawrie in the infield. The Jays' protected top five in the order (Jose Reyes, Russell Martin, Bautista, Encarnacion and Donaldson), while righty-heavy, might be the best in the American League. The team still has a ton of work to do (We need a front-end rotation guy, a ton of bullpen help, a proper 2B and a LF), but I'm happy to see the Jays this proactive in the offseason and using some of Rogers' endless moneybags for once.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman was told by a rival executive that David Robertson already has a three-year offer for about $39 million in hand.

Reports from a Dominican newspaper say the Mariners signed Nelson Cruz to a 4 year/$57 million deal.
Gonna be interesting to see what the O's do this offseason. They lost Cruz, potentially going to lose Markakis. There's rumors out there of trying to get Matt Kemp but the O's don't have the prospects to pull it off.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs have offered Jon Lester a six-year, $138 million contract. If I'm Ben Cherington, that contract is dangerously close to "you can have him" territory. I felt coming into the off-season that the furthest I wanted to see the Red Sox extend themselves was six years and $132 million. That's $22 million a season, perfectly reasonable for a player with Jon Lester's resume given his age and likely career trajectory. But then Hanley Ramirez signed for $22 million per and Pablo Sandoval inked a contract worth about $20 million per, and it sent contracts totally out of whack. So if the Red Sox want to go to six years and $144 million, I'd begrudgingly accept that. But if Lester wants a contract north of $25 million per, then the Red Sox need to tip their caps, admit defeat, then go out and sign James Shields, swing a trade for an ace (the Red Sox have the prospects to land almost any pitcher they want, in a perfect world, they acquire Chris Sale), then deal an outfielder (Yoenis Cespedes, we hardly knew ye) for a third or fourth starter. I'd be perfectly fine entering Opening Day 2015 with a starting rotation of Chris Sale, James Shields, Mat Latos, Clay Buchholz, and the winner of a spring training battle between Rubby De La Rosa, Joe Kelly, Anthony Ranaudo, Allen Webster, and Brandon Workman.

Though seriously, that is courageous. Baseball umpire is already one of the most yelled at positions in all of sports, and every time he makes a call that doesn't agree with the home team, he's going to hear that word by one idiot in the crowd.

That time of the year again with the HOF mess
A writer left Randy Johnson off the ballot and gave no reason for why he did that.
