Every so often I get in the mood to look up some old episodes. I was on Nickreboot.com and they were playing the Thanksgiving episode. The show is great generally, but I do like that the fact the 4th grade teacher Mr. Simmons is gay is NOT an issue at all. It only comes up here: {start at 12:34) Also this is pretty great:

Yeah "Hey Arnold" is I show that I grew to appreciate even more as an adult than as a kid.

Yeah "Hey Arnold" is I show that I grew to appreciate even more as an adult than as a kid. And I know there is a big "haha Ren and Stimpy got away with a dick joke" thing on the internet but that's not what I really mean. Hey Arnold is just a really smart show that I can appreciate on a whole new level now.

Was Mr. Simmons really gay? Did they ever come out and say or hint towards it?

It was a great show but, I don't think it holds up today. I try to watch it as an adult and I just can't get into it.
As a kid I loved it though.

I love Hey Arnold. Actually, when I was wandering a Walmart a few weeks ago, I found the boxset of all 5 seasons of Hey Arnold! for $18 and bought it... thrilled me so much. Gonna marathon them while I pass out candy on Halloween.

Eh... I'll be that guy... but I could never get into this show for some reason.
Maybe I was too old for it at the time.

Was Mr. Simmons really gay? Did they ever come out and say or hint towards it? That scene I posted hints at it big time...and the creator has confirmed that he was.

Nostalgia put aside, I feel that Hey Arnold holds up very, very well. I can get the arguments as to why it doesn't, because some elements definitely seem dated, but overall I think it absolutely holds up as a very well written show with very interesting characters.

I really couldn't get into it because of the main character. I'd say he was basically Jesus but Jesus had a personality.

With it's wide variety of characters who often got fleshed out into unique individuals it really was like a tamer version of The Simpsons, which makes sense considering Craig Bartlett is Matt Groening's brother in law.

Hey Arnold is just a really smart show that I can appreciate on a whole new level now. Definitely. Like, a lot of the Helga episodes gets into some pretty heavy topics that I'm surprised the writers were able to get away with.
