I assume the reason is not only to get the reaction they want (even though it sounds incredibly fake), but also to convince people watching to maybe give the same reaction whenever they go to a live event/show.
But...does it WORK? SmackDown to me is unwatchable because of the fake crowd noise. I can't imagine people listen to the overbearing monstrous pop Los Matadores got on SmackDown and then are convinced to cheer just as loud next time they see them.

Nope. Silence is better than glaringly artificial reactions.
If they were actually good at using the heat machine then I'd get it.

They should just use people who are/can get over It's so difficult to get over when WWE's booking philosophy is only the main event is important.

The fact they need to use it so often should send them a message that their booking is flawed.

I don't get why they keep using the SAME pop. Why not use like 10 different ones.
Have some more subdued ones too. When Los Matadores come out and they play a pop like CM Punk just returned in Chicago it sounds ridiculous.

I like when people they want to push go from a huge seagull pop on Smackdown to getting little to no reaction on Raw.

Instead of fixing the reason why the crowds are so dead, they instead decide to just pipe in crowd noise.
Gotta love this company sometimes.

I've never understood why they do it. Everyone watching the show would be aware that the reactions of the actual crowd don't match the noise on the broadcast. It convinces no one. It's an interesting insight into the mindset of WWE management that they think this bullshit actually fools people.

The fact they need to use it so often should send them a message that their booking is flawed. If it was used on 2000 SD, at the height of their best on-screen programming, then that argument is invalid. Sorry, but it's been there for well over a decade.

Fan reactions are the best form of feedback they could possibly have. There's no need to try to cover it. If a guy gets no reaction, or the wrong reaction, then they should use that as an indicator that they need to change things. Imagine if they piped in cheers for Rocky Maivia and never bothered to change his character at all, but stuck to the "he's a happy go lucky face!" persona.

Speaking of which, the Chris Benoit DVD has the exact same crowd noise pre and post match for every single match, even across his work in Japan to ECW to WCW through the WWE.
