Jericho's original name was to be Millennium Man Before that, actually, the big rumor was he was to be named Excalibur. Regarding Jake and the higher power, it was so rampant that a LOT of the then-major wrestling sites got trolled with a fake version of the results of one show with his "reveal". One of my all-time favorites that I don't see mentioned a lot anymore is the one about Paul Bearer's stable expanding beyond Mankind and Executioner by bringing back Papa Shango and Underfaker. And that reminds me of one even before that, of them bringing in Angel of Death to fight Undertaker not too long after UT's first face turn. That's what it was! I knew there was something else.

The GTV vignettes of a hidden camera filming wrestlers doing embarrassing things backstage was suppose to be Goldust. Stevie Richards and the Blue Meanie parody of the Blair Witch project called the Blond Bitch project was done to mock Sable's departure and pending lawsuit against the company, but was also rumored to be the return of Sunny to replace and get back at Sable. Speaking of GTV, there was also a rumor that it was going to be Tom Green. That wasn't a rumor, that was Vince Russo saying so on WrestleCrap Radio. Whether he's being honest or not is up for debate, but his explanation (it was going to be Green, Vince McMahon vetoed it because he'd never heard of Green) is very plausible.

One of my friends who doesn't watch wrestling and was never really into it STILL thinks that Vince McMahon is a character played by an actor and not the actual owner of WWE and that there has been at least 10 Undertakers. I've never heard that about Taker. I could Understand with Kane or Ultimate Warrior, since their faces were obscured. But Taker has obviously looked like the same man forever. It's pretty much like saying there were multiple Macho Men. My dad was never a fan, he tolerated it if I was watching and he happened to be in the room. A few years ago we were watching TV and there was an ad for Raw or something that had Taker in it, he says "That's not the same guy" I said, "Yeah, it's him, it's been 20 years already since you last ever saw him"

I remember reading how Jericho was definitely coming in over Jericho but couldn't use Jericho, so it was possible he'd be Chris Gericho.

I've posted this before in similar threads, but I remember the rumor that Paul Wight's WWF name was going to be Titan. One of my favorite (smarky) Nitro moments was Eric Bischoff referring to Kevin Nash as a Titan and then proclaiming Nash, "The nWo Corprate Giant" on Big Show's last night with WCW. I think the rumors about his new WWE name had come that afternoon.

Around 1998 or so, I remember rumors that the Hardy Boyz would either join DX or become the new, New Rockers.

I read in the Observer that the original plan was to pair Shawn Michaels with Ted DiBiase rather than IRS.

What was the rationale in Yokozuna joining the Hart Foundation? His partnership with Owen? Would Koko B Ware be joining after that?

I remember the rumor being that Kurt Angle would defend the WWF Title in the 2001 Royal Rumble match as a continuation of the "Kurt Angle vs. The World" storyline he had as WWF Champion. Would have been cool. He defended the WWF Title at the 2001 Rumble against Triple H. Do you mean 2000? No, I'm saying instead of defending against Triple H the rumor is that he would defend the WWF Title in the Royal Rumble match itself, against 29 other superstars.

Here's one I just remembered.
If you recall, at one point Thrasher was injured and they started repackaging Mosh (Beaver Cleavage, Chaz). There was a rumor that Thrasher would return with an evil clown gimmick.

I ask this with all due respect: How many of these rumors were prominent around the IWC and how many was just some kid spouting off on a random AOL message board? quite a few I'm seeing were making the major rounds back then.

Not a rumor exactly, but I recall at least one person thinking Eddie didn't die and that Hector Guerrero was him and that WWE had kept his name and fired him.

My brother tried to convince me Duke The Dumpster Droese was returning to the WWF as a member of Right to Censor.

I think GTV was actually going to be Goldust, the first time it appeared on Raw it was called GDTV.

I think GTV was actually going to be Goldust, the first time it appeared on Raw it was called GDTV. That was almost certainly the original plan. Then, I remember the rumor being Thrasher, with the G for Glen Ruth, though no idea how likely that was. I would love if they just brought back GTV without any explanation.

It actually randomly returned after a few month absence in 2000. This isn't a rumor, but more so stupidity. During the Monday Night Wars, WCW and WWF used to have specials on Home Shopping Network and qvc. I remember one WCW special where Kevin Nash was a guest. There was a live audience and a fan asked Nash what happened to Syxx? Nash said he was going to return soon. By this time, X-PAC had already been in the WWF for about six months. I thought he was going back to WCW. The real question is: did this guy never watch WWF?
