I can't say I've ever really listened to either extensively, but from the limited amount of listening I've done, I'd say Elton John.

Billy Joel; he was my first ever favorite musician when I was a kid, and "We Didn't Start the Fire" is the unofficial anthem of all US History teachers.

I have to say Elton John. Lets face it most of us have seen Lion King at one time or another and "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life" were my top favorites but it made me look at more from him and pretty much all if not all of his songs are memorable and all have a significant style. Plus Elton just has that niche when it comes to writing Romance or Rock n Roll Songs or songs with more feeling towards them like "Candle in the Wind", "Rocket Man", "Something About The Way You Look Tonight", "Empty Garden", amoung many others hes done.

Elton wrote Rocket Man. I can't not vote for him. I freaking love that song.

True, but I'd counter that the same can be said about Billy Joel. We've all heard "Piano Man", "New York State of Mind", "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant", etc. All of Joel's songs have his own sound as well - in fact, that's how the two of them are able to co-exist the way they do - they each have a signature style to their music. As far as romance - "She's Got A Way" is as beautiful as any love song Elton John has made. Its simplicity is its distinct beauty. It's not bells and whistles; it's just a man, his piano and his words. Rock & Roll? He literally has a song titled "It's Still Rock & Roll To Me". "You May Be Right"; "Big Shot"; "Only The Good Die Young" - all rooted firmly in rock & roll. So I don't know that I would agree that John has that niche all to himself. I'm not trying to knock Elton John because he's great, but all the things you pointed out as pluses for him can just as easily be pluses for Billy Joel.

Very slight edge to Billy Joel. For every TumbleWeed Connection or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, there is an atrocity like Victim of Love. Plus, Billy has never made a bad record.

Billy Joel's good, but he didn't co-write Tumbleweed Connection, or Caribou or The Lion King or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Elton's a freaking pimp. Deleted, just because.

I will say that even though I voted for Billy Joel, I do really have a soft spot for Elton John's video where he had Robert Downey Jr. lip-synching the song. I just can't remember off hand what the song was, but I did really like the video for it, and I recall it being around the time RDJ was finally turning his life around.

I like BIlly Joel a lot more. Not only for Piano man, but Uptown Girl is great. Elton John's "That's Why They Call It The Blues" is one of my favorite songs, but I give the nod to Joel.

Billy Joel songs have really connected with me.
Elton has some great songs, but they don't really connect with me on the same level.
Some of my favorite Joel songs are Innocent Man, Only the Good Die Young, Moving Out, New York State of Mind, For the Longest Time, Big Shot, and of course Piano Man. I dig a lot of Elton songs like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Empty Garden, but I prefer Joel.

Elton John
Haven't heard many songs from Billy Joel, except We Didn't Start The Fire, which is one of my all-time favourites.

AHHH!!! this is really hard for me to choose, Elton gave us "funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding" "high flying bird" "blues for baby and me" "street kids" "i guess thats why they call it the blues" "believe" everything on Captain Fantastic...
but then we get to Billy Joel and he gave us "everybody loves you now" "miami 2017" "angry young man" "scenes from an italian restaurant" "and so it goes" and everything on glass houses....
UGH!! I have to give it to Billy Joel, I just like his more aggressive voice, and enjoy his entire catalog more than elton...though i will say as a lyricist Bernie Taupin is amazing, his stuff with Elton is magic! but Im going with Billy due to his entire body of work.

Elton had a hand in John Lennon getting his first #1 as a solo artist (the last Beatle to do so) and made a bet with him to get him to do this:
That's awesome.

I like more Billy Joel songs than Elton John ones, so I guess he wins.

I need to re-download a few Billy Joel albums. I need more "Go to Extremes" in my life.
