I think it's one of the Oscar's biggest flubs of the decade that Hailee Steinfold was nominated for best SUPPORTING actress in True Grit, when in reality without her, there is no movie. Her work in that film is absolutely stellar. Was gonna say this. She was really amazing in that.

Anna Paquin in the Piano. A performance made even better for the fact that her character also essentially has to be the audience's transcriber for the mute Holly Hunter.

One of the top 100 films of all time. And I concur with the Paquin assessment. Too bad she grew out of it. Holly Hunter dominates in her role too. For true movie buffs, go see In America. Then, come back and add two names to this thread. It won't be difficult to do.

Her work in that film is absolutely stellar. And Jeff Bridges was nominated for Best Actor when he had less screentime and focus then Hailee Steinfold. It's like they only did that to make sure all the actresses they wanted to get nominated get nominated.

Her work in that film is absolutely stellar. I wouldn't call this a 'flub' by the Academy. This was done intentionally by the studio because they wanted to increase Hailee's chances of winning awards for the movie, thinking she would stand a better chance to win in the supporting category. This has been done in the past as well. Timothy Hutton (a young adult, not exactly a child) was nominated in the supporting category for Ordinary People, though he was clearly the lead in the film. This was done because he would have stood little chance of winning against the other actors, namely De Niro who won for Raging Bull.

Perhaps it's less of "great performance" and more of "f*** Hayden Christensen" ... but as stilted as this performance was by the kid, that little step back he did when the light saber went on said more than anything else could have. He shows up, thinking they're saved... and without one word spoken, he knows why Anakin's there and that they're all f***ed. The other kids just stand there... but he conveys everything perfectly.

some more I thought of that I don't think anybody has mentioned yet
Christina Ricci in The Addams Family movies. I mention this because I watched it recently but Trevor Morgan (who was also in The Sixth Sense and The Patriot) was really good in a guest arc on ER. For 80's child actors/actresses on sit-coms I always thought Soleil Moon Frye stood out as Punky Brewster. The kids that where mostly under 18 on Freaks and Geeks (pretty much the geeks).

I'd second the OP and say Maisie Williams in GoT is one of the best performances by a child actor I've seen in quite some time.
I'm still annoyed at the fact that she and Charles Dance didn't at least get a nomination at the Emmys for their work together in S2.

They campaign their actors for categories based on strength of competition. If they can make even a slight argument toward someone fitting into a certain category, they'll push for that to increase their odds of winning. Category fraud heppens every single year.
