Ok ... So in the near future, or today if you in the USA .. Blue-Ray dvd is released and later HD DVD will be released competing against each other ... unfortunatly despite an overload of hype and news, I'm still confused about some of the more simple questions ...
The Questions
1. What is the difference between the two formats?
2. If I only go with one format will I be limited in watching certain films from certain companies? i.e Disney is only releasing films on Blue-Ray ... so does that mean if I want to watch Jafar try and eat Aladdin I can only see it on Blue-Ray?
3. What happens to the currently reliable basic DVD that you can buy in the shops? Are they going to be obsolete?
4. Will I have to buy a different DVD player?

Will I have to buy a different DVD player? 0) I think HD DVDs are already released and we are waiting for Blue Ray. 1) Both formats display the video format in High definition picture and sound. Since this information takes up more space each have higher information holding capability. Blue Ray holds more information than HD DVD not sure how much exactly but its a lot. Also Blue Ray has less protection because of its layering. So basically HD DVD will probably hold as much content as regular DVDs but BlueRay has multiple times more but more easily scratched and damaged. 2) no idea 3) My guess DVDs will be around for a while like a decade or more before they start to become like VHS. Since most people don't have HD TVs yet. Until the HD TVs over take the market my guess studios will release the HD version and regular DVD versions for movies and stuff. 4) Yes but I think they might make them able to play regular DVDs but I'm just guessing at this point.

So far there isn't a Blu-Ray DVD worth owning. I checked out this week's Best Buy add and it looks like the first wave of Blu-Ray's are being released. There's nothing really worth it: XXX, Ultraviolet, Hitch, 50 First Dates. The only one that stands out is House of Flying Daggers, but I already own it.

Go with HD-DVD, if only to stick it to Sony for their stupid P$3.

Sony released Blu Ray discs before there was actually a Blu Ray player available for purchase.
Way to go Sony!
The Bly Ray system has also been one of the prime reasons that the PS3 has been pushed back like three times. Frankly, I'm not too excited about either one, and it doesn't seem like the general public is either.
