After fighting the NWO in WCW, Sting spent however many years in TNA preparing for Survivor Series, studying and fighting big heel faction after big heel faction, even joining a big heel faction with the Main Event Mafia. Sting's mission in life is to take out big heel stables, and Survivor Series was the first time he was actually able to do it in WWE without someone like Cena beating him to it.
Also I do like my friend's interpretation, who is a casual fan and didn't know much about Sting besides what I told him, he basically said he's Mike Erhmantraut from Breaking Bad, a cleaner type guy.

Absolutely not.
If there's one thing I've learned in my many years as a fan, it's that when it comes to big, "monumental" type moments, WWE is shit when it comes to following up on them. Dreadfully horrendous.
No, there's not some grand plan behind Sting's appearance. They probably didn't put more then 5 minutes worth of thought into it before it happened. You can also be fairly certain that they have absolutely no clue where it's going to lead, if it even leads to anything.
It was a spur of the moment, lets sucker everyone into believing anything can happen on the Network, deal.

We've still not gotten proper explanation for what Bray Wyatt is doing and he's been on the main roster for over a year now. They're never going to explain Sting's one night appearance.

In the Attitude Era, if Sting showed up at a PPV, they'd be tripping over themselves trying to fit him into the following night's show. Either the company doesn't care anymore or they have no clue what they are doing.

Here's the explanation...
It was a dream. We all dreamed it. Even Triple H.

From what I've heard, they called him on Thursday to be at the PPV with the original idea of filming a video package to air that night before he made his WWE debut where he'd set up a future appearances (something where he'd reveal his desire to wrestle Taker at Mania without talking) and that was the reported plan as late as an hour before the show.
Now that could have easily been leaked (the whole quick appearance thing) to hide his involvement in the main event but whatever the plan it I believe it was something that came together late in the week.

I still kinda want them to just not ever mention him or him ever show up again; and him be all: "well, you wanted me to show up in a WWE ring. You never said it had to mean anything. Now leave me alone."

If they would've explained it already, everyone would complain about how WWE rushed Sting.

I was involved in the main event of the greatest Survivor Series ever, Survivor Series 2014! SGK: You were? Sting: Yeah, it was just a month ago! SGK: Oh yeah. Sting: It was only a moment 30 years in the making, how could you forget? SGK: Well.....I'm going to go to sleep now Pop Pop. {Spoiler}{Spoiler} and with that Sting's Grandkid just turned heel it seems.

If they would've explained it already, everyone would complain about how WWE rushed Sting. I get that, but to have the biggest name to never appear in your company suddenly show up and (kayfabe) change the landscape of the company, and then spend the next two weeks largely ignoring it is....so like the WWE. Well, they did acknowledge it the night after. I don't think what their doing is necessarily wrong, just more so disappointing, as fans have waited so long to see Sting and we probably won't see him until the new year.

It's simple why he was there.
Look at the official name of his WWE theme.
"Sting Operation".
He was there to do that, and that was it.

I'd venture to guess something along the lines of him wanting to save WWE since he was in WCW and saw what happened when corrupt people were in charge.
The reality is, it won't get explained and he'll just be this big ominous figure you can see for $9.99 on the WWE Network w/o a subscription.

Turned up to help defeat a big heel group, got the hell out before a babyface could turn on him. It's actually one of the smarter moves of Sting's career.

Vince has finally seen the last 12 years or so of the Simpsons, where celebrities appear, say their name and leave. It's Sting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's right. Sting on Survivor Series!!! Tune in.
