Sent my pick in, and won a game on NBA 2K15 for the first time in ages. If that's not a good sign, I don't know what is.

12 picks in. Possibility of 5 more. If four come in from our usual "on time" people, we will move forward.

Well this sucks I had a nice post all written up...and then Chrome crashed. Stupid browser. So take 2. Do the Right Thing was the right thing to do. I can see where judges were coming from in that the music part of it may have come secondary in helping establish the scene. The scene/representation of the film was tops for me though. Loved it. yeah I loved all of my picks. Just coming to the realization that me and most of the judges have different interest/criteria which is frustrating. l I suppose its time for me to stop being lazy and type out some thoughts on the last round while we wait for picks. I quoted this post because I teased before the score reveal that I ranked something low that I wish I didn't have to. That was Do The Right Thing. I think that the most important word in this post is "criteria". The low ranking for Do The Right Thing had nothing to do with a different interest. I love the movie and think that it is important and very culturally relevant (maybe now more than ever) and this is a very pivotal scene. With that being said I don't think that it fulfilled the guidelines for the round. For me the music was the least important part of the scene. In fact it disappeared during the most important part of the scene. The music took a backseat to the dialogue and the acting. Unfortunately this round was all about the importance of the music. I don't think this clip showcased that. Had this been used for another round it very likely would have been number one for me. I think that as a judge it is important for me to not just rank the things I love highly and ignore what I am uninterested/unfamiliar with (of course I'm not saying that any judge in these games has every done this) I mean I've never seen or really been interested in Lost but it got a decent ranking from me because I think that the music helped to make that scene. For me judging entries within the context of the round and whether or not they fulfill the guidelines is very important. Unfortunately sometimes that means marking out for a pick only to be bummed out when I have to rank it low. Other thoughts: - It's really unfortunate about the Rocky pick having lyrics in it. I really dislike those movies but I think that the clip as a whole worked a lot better than others in this round. If not for the lyrics it would have ranked highly for me.
- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Requiem For A Dream, and Psycho are the epitome of what the round should be.
- As far as Requiem For A Dream is concerned, that's a movie I've only seen once (don't know if I could do it again). But I will never forget that movie or it's music. I was depressed for a week after seeing this movie
- Thanks Tyger, suicidal nightmare clown puppet may haunt me forever. Thanks buddy!
Now if you folks will excuse me its time for me to watch my teams atrocious offense fail to put up points on the Chargers (because I'm a masochist), and wrap some Christmas presents (Humbug!)

Well, here be my thoughts on this round, by pick.
1) Puppet Show: I figured that I was going to give this the highest rating out of any of the judges, and it is totally well deserved. The music only adds to the heart wrenching story here of this puppet learning how he is controlled by someone else and in his last defiant act, decides he rather die then be controlled. The music makes this story even more sentimental, sweet, artistic, and everything this category was supposed to be, which is elevatin the scene through music. A tip of the cap to you good sir.
2) Lost: Honest facts, never watched Lost. The Not Penny's Boat thing is foreign to me, but taking this scene in isolation shows you the magic of transition music. From the action packed opening string section to drive the tension to the transition to the slow beautiful piano music once Charlie realizes what he must do with the little bombastic horns to show the honor of his sacrifice. Again, great pick and showcases the power of music without even having many words throughout the scene.
3) Apocalypse Now 4) Requiem For A Dream 5) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
I've broken these next three out because I find it easiest to discuss them in a group as they were the picks I likely would have gravitated toward in this round. It was very hard for me to actually order these three until I landed on this order because all three pieces of music are so damn good. Lux Aeterna from Requiem is the best piece of music of three imo. It's haunting, it builds properly, it's just well orchestrated. However, since I'm a music buff and I know a little about Wagner and what Ride of The Valkyries symbolizes in his opera (the arrival of Brunnhilde's sisters to take fallen heroes to Valhalla) and putting that against the background of the most horrific war story in recent history puts that over the edge. Of course, I also wan't going to put Morricone out of my top five and that scene is awesome with his music, so it's fifth.
6) The Shining 7) Psycho 8) Saw 9) Halloween
Again, I'm breaking out a group because I'd like to highlight the amount of selections from the horror genre that were made here and I think those of you who went in this direction were super smart. No genre benefits more from great ambiance through music than the horror genre. The right sounds can put anyone on edge and bring what is a simple scene of a kid riding a tricycle into a scary close shot of that child as the music continues to build, adding tension to that scene. Both The Shining and Psycho rank higher here because of their iconic value. AS a huge fan of the Saw franchise I didn't feel right putting it below the opening to Halloween, since the opening is just there to introduce the characters and give you kind of a Pavlov's dog scenario with multiple false psyche-outs throughout. It's a clever subversion of the jump scare, but "Hello Zepp" is s staple of a large part of one of my favorite horror series.
Now, I know I said earlier in the thread that these clips ranked 10-16 kinda missed what I was looking for in the clips. With each, I'll tell you whay I put it lower than some of the others. This is not to say they are awful scenes, they just kinda missed the boat here.
10) Jurassic Park: Probably the most shocking of the bunch to be here since that main theme by John Williams is fantastic, but I was always more awed by the scope of the scene than the music. It added some bombast to it, but it just couldn't outdo the majesty of the scope. Very complementary music, but not something that really made the moment.
11) V For Vendetta: Man, Natalie Portman can act. Her performance made this scene for me, but that isn't saying that the music doesn't play a role here. It isn't really needed until they get out onto the that patio thing where she's standing in the rain, selling the trans-formative actions that happened prior to this. It's an ok use of the music but again, not anything really fantastic. Decent at best.
12) Benny Hill: Funny, but overplayed. That isn't your problem because it was revolutionary when it came out. But in my mind it's been beaten into the ground so much and done better by other pieces of media that it ranks low. Probably unfair to you for it to be this way, but them the breaks sometime.
13) Shaun of The Dead: In a round amount having the music make a moment happen, here was a scene in which no moment occurred. A curious selection that set a slightly slacker mood. Great if that's what you were going for, but I think you missed a great opportunity to go in a different direction with something actually of substance.
14) Braveheart 15) Do The Right Thing
Again, breaking these two out because they again fall victim to the big problem. This round was supposed to be about the music making the scene work. Both of these scenes rely most importantly on the dialog being given and not the music. If you were to literally take the music out of both of the scenes it would have no effect on them whatsoever and because of that fact, they have to rank so low on this ranking, even though they are both great scenes with incredible dialog. As stated earlier, maybe in a different situation these would be top of the chart, but not here.
16) Rocky III: Simply put, Gonna Fly Now has lyrics, the lyrics were in the clip, ergo it has to be bottom on principle alone.
SO there you have, my rankings and comments. You don't have to agree, but that's how I saw this round.

The pace for this is absolutely tremendous. It's almost too fast, in a sense (though I'm probably too fast with my picks as well). Stellar job everyone.
When we get into the harder categories, where contestants will have to make multiple picks, that's when we'll see who can outplay who. Loved judging the last game but I think this contestant pool is going to be even harder to beat.

Giving this one some thought. I don't want to send in a pick I'm not confident about at this point. I should have something in by later tonight. right now.

The remaining two contestants have been notified. Judges receive picks tonight regardless of whether or not I hear from our perennial late-comers to the party.

This is the first time I've felt frustrated in this game. I picked two things that have already been picked. I don't know what to pick.

This is the first time I've felt frustrated in this game. I picked two things that have already been picked. I don't know what to pick. There are 1000 holidays. There are 1.000.000 tv references to holidays. Part of the competition part of it is each players Pop Culture prowess. I get the frustration but there are 1,000,000 minus 16 viable choices. You got this. I have faith in ya.

I'm curious to see the break down for the holiday picks. I imagine Christmas and Halloween will dominate but there are a bunch of other holidays that could pop up.
There were a few picks I had in mind but I just couldn't find video for them.
