Link to ongoing news coverage.Mods feel free to lock this if it's not appropriate. Siege in my hometown entering it's 8th hour. Hostages being forced to hold up black flag with Arabic text. No communication as yet with perpetrator. Some hostages either been let go or escaped the cafe. Bit of background on the area. Martin Place is the major thoroughfare for pedestrians in the Sydney CBD. Usually a huge amount of foot traffic & nearby cars, buses etc. Apparently about 30 hostages and at least one perpetrator.

The Mods anticipated a thread to be made about this.
I would consider it a major news story right now, thus we can keep the thread open.
However, please respect each and everyone's opinions on the matter. Do not flame each other or wish harm to any party involved here. Keep to the topic at hand. Discussion of politics and religion are to be expected but please use common sense and decorum while delving into those topics.

The link I posted is to the Australian government news agency so I'm pretty confident any information posted there will be sensible in it's coverage of the events.

This shit is just plain crazy. The very same thing could have happened in Melbourne and I'm usually in the CDB to catch the train to the other side of the city.

I'm heading to Melbourne in a few days to spend Christmas, and then I hear this story.
It's freaking scary. No where is safe and it's becoming highly intimidating to even leave the house these days when stuff like this can happen at anytime.

Read some more of the details and some of the other rumblings going around. All I'll say is that it's done an excellent job of making me even more uneasy about the fact that I'm flying back to the US from Europe this weekend.

I know it sounds daft, but I dunno, I just wouldn't think of Australia as a place where you'd get terrorists. I guess I always figured they'd be scared off by all the animals trying to kill everyone. immigration needs much stricter rules for countries like australia and the uk I'm fairly certain Australia has one of the strictest immigration policies out there. Like, they won't let you in for the slightest infraction and if you're caught with goods you shouldn't have, even shit like dried fruit etc, they'll not let you in. Unless you were kidding, then it's too early in the morning for me to notice sarcasm.

My thoughts are with the hostages and hopefully we as a nation don't let fear, panic and anger dictate our actions.

I went to Australia as well, and they are hardcore when it comes to immigration, they are an incredibly strict country. I'm not sure about the UK, but just having traveled to Australia, they are hardcore. It's not their immigration policies. It's not Australia, but with New Zealand, I had to name some cities in New Zealand. I traveled to the UK as well, haven't been there for a few years so maybe things have changed. Thankfully it's all over though, even though there was a death besides the schmuck terrorist.

The main problem is with the open immigration policy of the EU meaning that folks from EU countries can just come and go, but that's stepping towards political talk, so I'll leave it at that. Prime example of how strict 'Straya is (And wrestling related!) is this:
