- Sulu isn't a ninja. One time while he was sick and delusional, he expressed an interest in fencing. That's all. Just because he's Japanese doesn't mean he knows martial arts. Sulu is a cool, calm and collected navigator and pilot. Well there was the "Don't call me 'Tiny'" scene in Search For Spock that indicated that Sulu had some serious hand-to-hand skills. Self-defence is fine. In Star Trek 1.0, I think he actually wielded a sword.

In Star Trek 1.0, I think he actually wielded a sword. True. I can buy that Sulu had close-combat training (which I think is what Pike called for), but the sword was a little too much. The bigger problem I had with that scene was considering the extent of Kirk's training seemed to be bar fights (and the fact that he gets his ass handed to him constantly in both movies), there was no reason for him to be on that mission besides the writers giving him something to do.

Kirk getting the Enterprise reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where that crazy submarine captain makes Homer second in command, then captain when he fires him out of a torpedo tube.
If they wanted to show the crew at a younger age, which was actually proposed as the plot to Star Trek VI in 1991, they should have shown them starting from scratch on some sort of training ship designed specifically for them. It makes no sense for a relatively young, unproven crew to be given command of the Federation's lead ship.
