I'm not completely sure why, but I don't have a good feeling about the future prospects of this series. You've got a great cast. I know Into Darkness divided people, but overall J.J. Abrams left the Star Trek brand in a great place. I really love the first one. Make a Star Trek movie! Don't try to make your own Guardians movie! You could argue they took from you! Hell, they even use the same actress for their female lead!

Hollywood studios can't help themselves. Of course they're going to try and make their own version of Guardians of the Galaxy. And of course it will be Star Trek 3 looking nothing like the first two movies, let alone OG Star Trek.
Of course. Might as well get McG to direct it.

This is the corporate meddling that causes film franchises to die. I still have yet to see Guardians of the Galaxy, but I'm pretty sure that its success was from more than just the fact it was a space sci-fi adventure. You can't just take a movie, copy it, and expect good results. It just doesn't work that way.

The last Trek movie where they tried to mix a light and funny tone with supposedly serious story was Insurrection, and frankly it sucked. Honestly call it personal opinion, but when ST tries to ape contemporary popular stuff, it doesn't really work. TMP tries so hard to be 2001 and falls flat on its ass, the episode Starship Mine is a meh effort at being Die Hard in space, and there are numerous Voyager episodes which feel like a sloppy attempt at recreating one genre or another.
I admit I wasn't particularly big on Abrams' Trek work as his character stuff always seems to take a back seat to the set pieces, but at least it its own thing. If audiences want to see Guardians of the Galaxy again, they'll just see the sequel to that. Putting a Trek peg into a GOTG hole strikes me as ill advised.

This is the problem when studios try to shoe-horn existing franchises into completely different styles because one movie made more money. Even in the new series that dumbed down Trek, it still has a completely different tone and premise from GotG. Trek is high-concept Sci-Fi, and while Abrams did his best to make it more appealing to the masses, it still has maintained at least a semblance of that. GotG's tone is completely different, it's a swashbuckling space movie, more akin to Star Wars than Trek.

I saw the name Justin Lin in the opening post, and immediately had a vision of Vin Diesel in a Starfleet uniform and the Enterprise "tokyo drifting" through an asteroid belt...

So after redoing Star Trek 2, they want to redo Star Trek 4.

If they want a more comedic Star Trek, they've already got Simon Pegg, so just bring in Edgar Wright as director and let them write it. It would probably work better than anything else the studio will come up with.

I'm actually glad. Orci is the worst. Him and his partner have ruined a ton of movies.

They've had no new ideas for Star Trek since they rebooted it.
The aesthetic change has been awful. The Enterprise is hideous, engineering looks like a refinery, the bridge looks like Apple designed it, the cinematography is the same old shit we see in every movie these days with that hideous blue filter and washed out look, and the costume design is grotesque. I don't know who thought it was a good idea for Starfleet officers to wear grey uniforms with Nazi-esque hats.
The scripts have also been terrible. Hiding the Enterprise in an ocean? Uh....why? A raw cadet being promoted to captain of the Federation's flagship? It'd be like replacing Picard as captain with Nog. Nero's hatred of Spock made no sense at all. What was the point in even mentioning Khan or Section 31 in the last movie? Why did the evil Admiral have a model of his secret ship clearly displayed at Starfleet? Don't even get me started on Carol Marcus (a scientific genius in the original timelines) stripping down to her underwear for....some reason.
There's no originality. The last movie simply cribbed The Wrath of Khan and switched the Spock and Kirk roles. All the characters have been flanderised or are so different to their original incarnations, they may as well have not used their names at all. Scotty is a moron. Why does he have a pet alien? Spock is basically Data. Kirk is a sex obsessed maniac, Bones simply spouts dumb metaphors and analogies, Chekov and Sulu are useless. Only Uhura has seen any constructive development.
Trek In Name Only.

Only Uhura has seen any constructive development. While I actually like both the Trek reboot movies so far, I can't disagree with you on any point. I'm quoting this section however, because for me the character development of Uhura has made her deeply unlikeable. At least the rest of the crew I find likeable one way or another, Uhura just comes across as a bitch.

They've given Uhura a little bit more to do, but I agree, her character is obnoxious. In their efforts to make her strong and sassy, she seems bitchy and has clearly whipped Spock. Original Uhura had a limited role, but Nichelle Nichols was so charming, she managed to get it over.

I thought the first two did well and we're pretty popular. Why not stay the course and just let it be Star Trek? (Yes I know some fans already say it's not Star Trek)

Here's what they need to do in Star Trek 3.0 - Fewer explosions. Less running. Also, why does everyone talk so fast? It's incomprehensible. - Kirk, despite popular perception, was not a sexual predator. Occasionally he romanced some babe, but it was a relatively rare thing and usually accompanied by either tragedy or resulted in Kirk once again alone, because Kirk's devotion to the Enterprise overrode anything else. - Uhura is supposed to be a capable professional. She's not part of the dominant trio, and doesn't manipulate Spock by appealing to his Vulcan-penis. In fact, Spock shouldn't even be interested in sex at all except during Pon Farr, the seven-year Vulcan mating cycle. - Dump Scotty's pet. I don't know what the hell it is. It's appeared in TWO films. Enough is enough - Sulu isn't a ninja. One time while he was sick and delusional, he expressed an interest in fencing. That's all. Just because he's Japanese doesn't mean he knows martial arts. Sulu is a cool, calm and collected navigator and pilot. - Chekov isn't Wesley Crusher. He's not an annoying genius. He's a tactical officer. Keep him in that role. Give him New Sulu's fighting skills and tactical abilities. - Karl Urban needs to understand that his purpose is not to imitate DeForest Kelley. He can't do it. He needs to be the down to earth voice of reason that McCoy was - Someone tell Zach Quinto that Spock is a half human Vulcan, not a robot. - Give them an entirely original adventure. Don't steal the story from a previous Trek film. They need something to make their own. - End the movie with the destruction of the Enterprise, and the new Enterprise shown under construction, which should look like this... link

Sulu is a cool, calm and collected navigator and pilot. Well there was the "Don't call me 'Tiny'" scene in Search For Spock that indicated that Sulu had some serious hand-to-hand skills.
