I'm reminded of a match, which I believe was on WCW Nitro, where Rick Steiner injured Buffy Bagwell. I'm pretty sure this was a legit injury. If not, they did a great job selling it. The commentators weren't selling it like your typical fake injury and Buffy was in the ring through an entire commercial break and well into the next segment while EMT's were prepping him for the stretcher. Then, as I recall Buff was out of action for a long time, wore a neck brace, etc. Everything seemed legit, because I think it was.
Then, months later, Buff attacks Rick Steiner while supposedly still injured, claiming that it was a ruse all along. I felt this was really stupid, because if a legit injury does nothing else, it makes wrestling look dangerous and lends credibility to what the guys are doing in the ring. Also, legit injuries treated like legit injuries gives more credibility to kayfabe injuries, since it's easier to sell a few fake ones so long as there are some real ones sandwiched in there too. Buff claiming that his real injury was fake not only damaged the credibility of injuries, but it was also just a really stupid way to start a feud.
Buff should have come out looking for sympathy while he was injured and whined and played a victim to get the crowd to turn on him, then did a Bob Orton thing when he came back from injury, trying to wear casts and blaming every defeat on how Rick Steiner injured him. It would have made a better heel turn and made more sense from a storyline perspective than some guy sitting in a wheel chair for months just so that he could eventually jump out of it and go "HAHA IM NOT REALLY HURT!!!"
What are other examples?
