www.businessinsider.com/lizard-squad-hack-playstation-and-xbox-2014-12If you played any online games since September, especially on Blizzard's Battle.net, other MMORPG's, or PSN, you're probably familiar with these wastes of human life. They DDoS'd (distributed denial of service attacks) the most popular online gaming services in order to be a bunch of assholes, mostly. It went from cybercrime to outright of threats of terrorism by harassing SOE's president John Smedley, including making a bomb threat against his flight, causing the plane to be diverted. They crawled back into whatever hole they came from for a lot of October and November, but planned to DDoS PSN and XBox live over Christmas. But a whitehat hacker group called Finest S quad formed to take them down. They managed to doxx all the members of Lizard Squad, resulting in members quitting the group and arrests. They also submitted the exploits used by the lizards to the affected networks' admins so they can plug them up and prevent similar attacks using the same exploits in the future.

If only more people would use their hacking expertise for good instead of petty mischief.

Well that all sounds like great news. It's good to see people using hacking for positive reasons.

Whitehat hacking is a lot more common than you think. It just doesn't make for good news because a lot of it has just become the norm for the tech industry. Pretty much every major cyber-security company, software publisher, or network infrastructure company has at least one whitehat hacker on payroll to find exploits and fix them or suggest fixes, among doing other things like developing security software.

Goddamn, I remember reading some cool shit whitehat hackers had done a while back, led to some pretty neat shit. Glad to see them go after these tossers.

Glad to see the ethical side of hacking get some publicity instead of the troglodytes who "do it for the lulz". Also glad to see a Robin Hood-esque group fight back and take them down.

I really wish there were tougher penalties for nuisance hacking. I really can't stand hackers. They're pathetic... and it's not like other crimes like theft or assault where there might be underlining reasons for the crime. It's just dickheads deciding to be dickheads behind the anonymity of the internet.

I am hesitant to ever condone doxxing(it's one of the most vile things you can do online, particularly if you aren't positive you have the right person), but in this case, I don't think the Lizards left them much choice.

I had a teacher in high school who wanted to make and distribute a computer virus that just forced your antivirus software to run.

As a player of various blzzard games (mainly wow and diablo 3), it makes me happy that these goons are getting what they deserve.

This is a job well done but it's becoming clearer and clearer how f***ed our future is.
