Final Fantasy 6..followed by Earthbound. Wow... you're the first person who completely agrees with me on Final Fantasy 6 and follows it up with Earthbound... nice... Final Fantasy VI (FF3 to US SNES gamers) is RPG HEAVEN for me. I would have seriously made out with the cart when it came out....if it didn't taste like dust and microchips.

It's one of those things, i wish I could convince people who loved FF7 to play FFVI, but they take one look at the graphics and run away... But hot damned was it good... The storylines for each of the characters (I can't remember names because I always changed them, but the swordsman having his village wiped out and then the situation with Terra's parents were heartbreaking)... Now i need to play this game damnit... Thank god it's coming out for the GBA (good for bedtime gaming)...

I went with final fantasy, however I would like to not that Secret of Mana is part of the Seiken Densetsu series, Earthbound is Mother 2, and this is a great site with many RPGs on it www.rpgclassics.com/

You can find FF VI for the PSOne, and pretty cheap.
Honestly, I didn't like FF 6. Not the story, which was really good, but the whole Esper system frustrated the hell out of me. I want my stats to go up every level, not when I have something attached that is really easy to forget to do or have attached to someone else, which means I have to go back to the airship and take 5 minutes just to get straight. It was a headache.
Also, Kefka was a little bitch. I whupped up on him after I learned his second form's attacks. It was pretty much Sabin, Cyan & Celes spanking him with the fourth being different each time.

Suikoden. 1 was a bit generic but still, the Suikoden series.

Psycho Cyan>Wind God Gau>everything else

Gau i just never had patience with. And I think I had Cyan & Sabin at over 100 Vigor each, and Cyan's level 7 attack. So between the two of them I could do a good amount of damage each round, plus on the second form I had Edgar & his trusty chainsaw to pump it up.

Edgar's nice and all but his chainsaw is pretty week compared to alot of other things thats why I don't use him much, I usually have Gau Sabin and 2 randoms, though Umaro is enjoyable, personally I've been doing starting equipment and low level games lately which makes Gau a must

Other, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (and it's offshoots).
It's RPG-like. You level up, get new skills, so on and so fourth.

It was pretty much Sabin, Cyan & Celes spanking him with the fourth being different each time. yeah, I know you can find it for PS1 cheap, but the PS2 is in the living room and I end up usually playing videogames late at night before bed and have had woken up in front of the TV, controller in hand, too many times, so this way I can just lay in bed, turn off the lights, be taken on a mystical adventure, and sleep without having to move... Yes, I know I'm a lazy bastard... See, I loved the Esper system, but then again, I also loved tailoring each member's magic to exactly how I want it... Man, I'm just remembering when you first fight Kefka and beat him pretty easily and thinking "What? It's done already?!" then him pretty much f***ing up the entire world and having to start essentially from scratch... That beginning part with Celes after that seemed ridiculously hard at the time...

as a Series, I have to vote for Suikoden. I love those games. I could write my thesis on how much I love those games. those games are for me what Final Fantasy is to a lot of RPG fans. I love how the stories feel more like an RTS than an RPG because instead of the typical "save the world from the evil bad guy" quest, you're fighting a war, and getting all 108 characters is always a thrill and a half. the fact that all the games are linked to eachother in one world continuity is just plain cool (and seeing characters from past games return, and characters who were villains in previous games become allies in future games is always fun). also, the magic system is really awesome and unique, and gives you tonnes of customization options that are fun to tweak with. and I always love the big war battled (especially in part 5, where I feel they finally found a perfect system).
but in terms of individual games, I LOVE Wild Arms 1 more than anything else. it was great, for reasons I can't fully explain but I'll try. the 2D graphics are the most beautiful I've ever seen (though the 3D combat graphics were admittedly horrible). the story is epic in scope without ever being confusing (which is my one pet peeve about most of Squaresoft's RPGs, in that the plot tends to get a bit too complicated/pretensious for its own good). memorable characters, and I liked the fact that it was a group of well developed villains as opposed to the usual 1 man kill team that most RPGs rely on (e.g. Sephiroth, Luca Blight from Suikoden 2). and the gameplay was simple but fun. there's more to it than that, but that would take too long. also, the artwork was beautiful.
