I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand it is a no brainer from a marketing standpoint. After all if there are two indie shows one of which claims to have a world title and the other doesn't, shit munchers could be drawn in by the company with this title. On the other a promotion that only runs out of Bumf***, Tennessee claiming to have a title representative of the world seems quite silly.
I think promotions that have their location in the name have it a little bit easier in this regard than ones that don't. They don't have to feel as obligated to put the word world in a title and can still seem like a big deal. For instance if there was a company called Uruguay Pro Wrestling they could just have their top champ be the Uruguay Pro Wrestling Champion. That way it still seems like a big deal as it is representative of the whole country, but is only using the promotion's name to establish this rather than throw "World" in there.

Honestly, I think it's a force of habit. Even if it's just like... the Ring Of Honor Champion. Someone's gonna do a promo where they refer to it as the Ring Of Honor World Championship, or Championship Of the World... because that's what we've grown up listening to. So I think it morphs into "World Championship" just through natural language.
I know some companies, ROH now that I think of it... that will defend their title in Japan, and because of that fact... say it's now a "World" championship since it has been defended overseas as well. Which, I can accept that definition.

I've never seen an indy company call their top title the "World" title aside from the bigger indies.
Smaller indies I've just seen their titles be called the "Heavyweight Championship" without the word "World" in it.

I have no problem with it if said title actually been defended in more than the host country. ROH has. PWG has. Evolve recently done it. Same for Shimmer.

Its no sillier than WWE doing it. But the WWE Title has been defended overseas Against other WWE competitors though. A "World Title" implies they're the best in the entire world, not just that they have the ability to move the same matches to a different location. If the Harlem Globetrotters defeat the Washington Generals in China, then the Trotters aren't suddenly a "WORLD CHAMPION BASKETBALL TEAM."

When ROH was still very much an indie and not a lower-level National company, they had legitimate claim to promote a world title as their championship had been defended in Canada, the US, Mexico, the UK, and Japan. These other companies should just go for "*Insert Company Name* Heavyweight Champion" or so.

The "World" part hasn't meant a thing since the Gold Dust Trio in the 1930s, to any promotion, if not even before that. They're all company titles. That goes for other sports too (Looking at you, MLB).

This isn't the Olympics were it is a legitimate competition among the best in the world. If John Cena defends the WWE title against Antonio Honda in Japan, that doesn't mean it's suddenly a world title. Tanahashi defended the IWGP title against Charlie Haas in New York. I like Haas but can you tell me with a straight face that he worthy of a title shot?

"WORLD CHAMPION" sounds a lot better than "Paducah, KY Champion." Just as "WWE WORLD CHAMPION" sounds more interesting than "WWE Title Holder."

If an Indy says that they have a world champ it's not like theyre claiming their guy is the actual best in the world, just that he's the best in the world out of the guys who have a shot of competing in that particular organization.
