Got a kit for making my own beer for Christmas. Haven't tried it yet, but definitely curios. Any advice?

I made quite a bit back when I was a student. I seem to remember sterilizing EVERYTHING and checking specific gravity all the time. This was before all the bags and brewster kits you can get nowadays. Also tried rice and raisin whisky which tasted lovely but half a glass was enough to blow your socks off. This might help with anything specific. www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/

And I'm betting it's a nice cheap fizzy lager you buy as well.

I haven't a friend did. Don't do what he did and place it by the furnace to speed up the aging process.

I did until last year but stopped due to a lack of space.
Keeping you beerr at a constant temperature makes a world of differnce in how your beer will taste so if you are willing to get serious about your beer after dropping a few brews down the line. Investing in a temperature control unit and a fridge might help.
that and using better yeast.

My wife got me a kit a few years back for Christmas. There are a few problems with this. The first is that we live in a one bedroom condo, and don't have room to be brewing beer. The second is that while I like beer, I'm extremely lazy. It ended up sitting there for almost a year before getting thrown out.
She does her best trying to be creative for Christmas, but it always ends up like that.

The three people I know that make the best beer/wine all have one thing in common: Old houses with deep limestone basements. Nice cold, dark places.

Even the lack of space isn't that much of a problem- I only have a one-bedroom apartment (that's kind of cluttered, to boot), and I've been able to brew beer in it without a problem.
