RIP Mario Cuomo (June 15, 1932 – January 1, 2015)
I hesitated making this because he was a political figure, but I hope we can leave love/hate and politics at the door and just respect the dead.
Rest in Peace Mr. Cuomo.

I can't say I know much about him tbh but there's nothing wrong with making a thread for the death of an influential figure, as it's an important enough story to transcend, imo, the no politics rule (much like we had threads for the current pope being elected and catch-all election threads, etc.)
Just try to keep the politics, for the most part, out of this and respect each other and your opinions.

For people who are don't know of him (or maybe have just heard his name) he was 1975-1978 - Secretary of State (New York) 1979-1982 - Lieutenant Governor of New York 1983-1994 - Governor of New York
His son Andrew is the current Governor of NY and another, Chris, currently works for CNN.
Mario died today, just a couple of hours after his son Andrew was sworn in for a second term. No matter where you lay on the political spectrum, you have to feel for him there. It would be a very bittersweet day for the family.

God, this is hard. I was about to ask mods if this thread would be OK to honor him.
I can only say this much without violating any rules - the speech Cuomo gave at the 1984 convention spells out my political beliefs and values to an absolute t. I keep in on my iPad and still listen to it frequently. He will always remain the great "what if" to me. What could he have done if he had been President? Where would we be as a nation now?
All I can say is... I feel I've lost one of my compass points tonight and my voice politically in one horrible stroke. I will miss him terribly and will always hope what he saw for our country and for each other as Americans will someday come to pass.
Rest in peace, Mr. Cuomo. Thank you for your service to your state, to our country and to our future.

Wow, with 2014 ending with taking Edward Hermann from us yesterday, 2015 sure didn't wait long to pick this morbid trend up...
RIP, sir.

I'll remember him from the Ken Burns Baseball documentary. Yes! Him joking about the blood clot he got from being hit in the head by the fly ball is what lead him into politics is brilliant. Question - would it violate the politics rule if we posted links to any of his speeches? It's going so well so far, I will not contribute anything that may cause a problem.

If you guys want, you can pm each other about speeches. I also think it would be acceptable to mention speeches like "search for X on youtube", but I wouldn't link them.

I thought this was about the Orwells lead singer. My heart sank. I didn't know he shared a name with a famous political figure. R.I.P.
