I'm reminded of when Bryan Alvarez gave Taker/HBK at WM 25 **** 3/4 instead of *****. When asked why, he hemmed and hawed and never gave a real reason. It wasn't ***** because it wasn't. Ridiculous. Didn't he offer an explanation, though? I seem to remember him saying that being in the building live, it looked like Taker might have been seriously hurt doing that dive, and it took Alvarez out of the match a little. Sure, not a great explanation, but he did give one. To me the fact that Shawn managed to turn that into a legit drama of Taker being counted out that the crowd COMPLETELY bit on kind of nullifies that.

"He looked like he was really hurt," so because Taker did a great job doing exactly what he was supposed to do that it made his job less great? What part of the game is that?

No love for Zayn/Cesaro, Natty/Charlotte, or Sasha/Charlotte? Actually, I liked Zayn/Breeze more than Zayn/Cesaro. And as mentioned, Wyatts/Shield was one of the best for sure. Checked, and here's what he gave those matches: Wyatts/Shield from EC- ****1/4 Zayn/Cesaro- ****1/4 Charlotte/Natalya- **** Natalya/Banks- ***1/2

I respect Meltz but more often than not I realised over time that I disagreed with his analysis. He raved like crazy about a match that AJ Styles had in New Japan, saying it was his best match in 5 years and frankly I didn't think much it. I had seen a better match by Styles on TV just a few months before. Sometime I think Meltz is taken into the hype and build in notions and perceptions of what is taking places. Like it was Styles in New Japan and Meltz is in love with Japanese Wrestling.

I thought Bryan vs. HHH was a better match than Bryan vs. Orton vs. Batista, but maybe that's just me.

For a guy crapped on by the crowd it's hilarious that Dave Batista is in two of the best matches of the year, both from WWE's own rankings and from Meltzer. Namely the WM main event and also the Evolution/Shield match. It's hilarious but also makes perfect sense, it was his heat that partly made these matches work so much in the first place.

All those matches would had 5 stars if those were wrestled in the tokyo dome or the budokan hall

Meltzer? Give praise to a women's match? Oh, you are adorable! All five stars. The most recent on those lists was 20 years ago. You really expect me to believe that there has been no women's match worthy of five starts since 1995? And I find it equally baffling that there was not a single one on these lists outside of Japan.

There's also the fact that there were more than two people in those matches as well, so he was able to get some rest periods in as well. I shudder to think of him having to do a 20 minute main event singles match.

I guess just me personally, but I've not seen women's matches with the same kind of intensity and energy as the ones I've seen from that era of AJPW. And then there's also the fact that Meltzer was basically a huge fanboy for the whole thing, going there all the time, hanging out with the women. I feel like over and over again he's been very candid that the star ratings are an entirely subjective of-the-moment kind of thing, and not a great measure of like absolute weight or merit.

He's had too many good matches to say he doesn't.

And all I can think of talking about top women wrestlers in the US since the late 90s comes down to Trish and Gail Kim.
