I hate Rusev's gimmick. People who are old enough to remember the cold war are too old to have their intelligence insulted by the gimmick and those young enough who don't remember it and aren't up on geopolitics, are probably thinking "What's the beef with Russia anyway?" It's so cheap and elementary. May as well have a puppet show where the 'big bad wolf' comes and gobbles everyone up. It feels like going to the circus - grown ups are bored and it insults their intelligence, kids wonder what the hell is going on. "Evil America, crush you" gimmicks belong in the past. He should have been pushed as the undercard Lesnar, nationality aside. This would be true if it didn't get any reaction, but it still gets plenty of heat every week even if it's cheap and old. Roman Reigns was in the ring and all that was heard were "USA" chants. Some stuff just always works, man.

Some stuff just works, man. It's cheap heat though. It's "what a good game by that local baseball team last night?" reaction. It's meaningless outside of the immediate response. If this was a few years ago maybe when there was some kind of '1984 Olympics' competitiveness/loathing in the general population where it can gain traction. Now there's not. Millennial's don't care. Sure he gets heat because she says stuff designed to get her booed but I think there's a difference between heat and booing/cheering what someone says. ...right here in Mobile, Alabama!

Rusev's real heat comes within the match though. He's great at being dominant and vulnerable at the same time. It lets him build his heat on the opponent and make his opponent look worthy of defeating him. The gimmick is just a hook...not a great one but its enough to allow his ability to shine through. I felt the same way about Cesaro's Uber American US title run. Sometimes assigning a simple gimmick and getting the hell out of the way works out.

What's impressive about Rusev is how quickly he has improved. He was complete shit in NXT.
A couple more years and he should be amongst WWE's best workers.
