One that a lot of people take as fact. Dave is the reason why a lot of folks know Kenta Kobashi and Misawa better than their own mommas. His musings and recommendations influenced a generation. Can't we just be happy that there's a ton of new Swagsuke, Kota, Omega and Okada fans after WK9 and not try to bring them down by pointing out that every show isn't the January 4th Dome Show? I can see where he's coming from. ________ has left the building is a vet so while I'm sure he enjoyed the show he's probably rolling his eyes at the influx of newbies who have long heard about this promised land of puroresu where every match is a Meltzer-certified five stars and finally got to experience an amazing f***ing show for the first time due to it being much easier to obtain than previous years and are expecting everything to be like that from here on out, so he just wants to temper expectations. Personally, while it's not like this all the time, I think the product is still pretty cool and the in-ring stuff is higher quality on average than most promotions so I don't want to shoo anyone away who's curious about learning more, especially since while there may not be another Dome Show on the horizon there's a HUGE backlog of awesome matches for them to check out. For example, if Nakamura's your dude after watching this show, why not catch up on some of his matches, like his G1 outings last year against Shibata, Nagata, and Okada, for starters?

I think what ________ has left the building is trying to tell us is that he thought Nakamura was cool before it was cool. I know that feeling all too well.

But yeah, New Japan is the shit. But I want people to be prepared to ride or die with them and not turn tail when something new pops up and NJPW hits a rough patch. I hope New Japan put up the Inoki turns New Japan into a pseudo MMA company years on their site and try to see if newbies can stomach that garbage.

How does this post tear down Wrestle Kingdom? Meltzer has and still is considered someone whose opinions are highly regarded. I think New Japan is one of the best companies on pro wrestling today but the hype is getting out of control. I been watching New Japan from the good times and the bad. I seen what happens when the euphoria ends. I'm not saying that you're tearing down Wrestle Kingdom, not at all. I just think that you might be going a little bit too hard in your attempt to lower expectations. For example, say someone who had never gotten into WWE watched WrestleMania live and came on saying they wanted to see more and that they loved Ziggler, Ambrose, Rollins etc. I don't think that pointing out every fault that WWE has to them to lower their expectations would be the best course of action. I think if people are going to be a fan, let them. If they're going to decide it's not for them, let them. I know you're trying to counteract future disappointment, but I think the vehemence with which you're doing so might be doing more to convince people who are on the fence to NOT watch than anything. I might very well be wrong though, just my opinion. Keep on doing you sir.

I watched AJPW and NJPW from when i was around 3 to 12 so i know it isn't all sunshine but i would take the worst of the MMA years over anything current WWE or TNA.

Maybe it's just me, but a big part of why I never got as into New Japan (and most wrestling in foreign countries) was the lack of english. Hell, I'd be fine with subtitles. It makes it hard to invest myself into these guys without knowing anything about them and their feuds. That english language PPV really helped me know some history behind these guys and especially in the Nakamura/Ibushi match, that english commentary really pushed that match from being one I liked but unaware of the history, to "Holy Shit, these two are putting on a great story!".
So yeah, it made me a Nakamura fan, but it made me an Ibushi fan as well. If they get a show over here in the US I will definitely go out of my way to watch.

So yeah, it made me a Nakamura fan, but it made me an Ibushi fan as well. If they get a show over here in the US I will definitely go out of my way to watch. It's a problem I had initially when getting into puro, but the stories are 99% told in the ring. The matches themselves, the camera angles (the camera work is top-notch, seriously), the facial expressions, etc. It'd be awesome if I could understand the language better and know what everyone's saying, but after watching for a while I got a feel for everyone and realized that wrestling at its core and the stories it tells are universal. The best, most recent example I can think of is Tanahashi vs Shibata last year. Those dudes had been beefing for a while due to Shibata leaving the company in 2004 when it could have used him the most while Tanahashi stuck it out, only for Shibata to return when things were better in 2012. Tanahashi went on to become the golden boy, naturally, while Shibata has just been a bit of a reject, a serious loner who mostly takes turns tagging and feuding with his friend Hirooki Goto. They traded barbs with each other back and forth, both making valid points, until they finally faced off in the G1 Climax. (Let's ignore the match they had in 2013, though I thought it was pretty good.) Without even knowing a single word of that, that image lets you know what kind of story this match has going into it. And this one adds a different perspective. It's surprisingly nuanced storytelling in a medium that doesn't normally get that treatment, and you don't need to speak a word of Japanese to get it. Forgive me if it sounds like I'm gushing but it's stuff like this that reminds me of how awesome wrestling can be.

The only reason I watched New Japan at all was for CTU, a stable that no one seems to remember anymore. (I even bought an ill-fitting CTU shirt.) I didn't need English to know why they were beating on the Apache Army. Everything else... It felt like I was missing something by not knowing Japanese.

I've been on and off in my love for NJPW. I admit, as a foreigner, it was a bit hard to get into at first because I didn't know who anyone was and didn't have the commentators to help me in my knowledge. I tried but got bored with the product fast.
Now I can get into the match stories without the language because I've taken the time to study up and watch as many matches as possible thanks to NJPW world -- it's been a major help. I have to throw GFW in there as well as being a huge help for me: the English commentary is a huge bonus and will hopefully attract a broader audience to the product that doesn't have the time to study up and learn who people are and what the match story's happen to be.
NJPW is great. With the network, I look forward to getting into the product even more in the future.

Yep the commentary is great, this my first time watching a full Japenese show and Id gladly watch more with these two commentating. Ive always known the in ring action to be good but good commentary means alot to my viewing expirince which makes it pretty much impossible to enjoy WWE alot of the time. Some funny highlights so far: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Striker: "Srtong style is the answer to the question 'is wrestling real?'."
_______________
Striker: "And Kenny Omega swerved the fans when he first arrived here..." JR interupting: "he LIED to the fans. Ive never been swerved, I dont know what a swerve is, he lied."
_______________
Srtiker: "Doc Gallows is a real good brother." That was one of my favorite moments of the broadcast, JR keeping it kayfabe. I love little moments like that from him. I like the fact that they noted that Okada and Tanahashi are now 3-3-1 facing each other, which means a rubber match may be in the offing eventually. Very excited about that prospect. Also, for all of the Nakamura love that the board has picked up (and it's really, REALLY deserved), I love how Ibushi hung with him. He's got a very bright future in the main event scene. Dude might be the one who eventually takes the belt off Nakamura, and could be the springboard to the IWGP heavyweight title. When he hit his own Boma Ye on Nakamura, I was friggin' stunned. I can't wait to see more of him. I love this little tidbit about #Swagsuke as well

Despite my better judgement I bought that shirt along with a Nakamura shirt and BC bandana. I mean, how do you not love this?

I wanted to buy a black New Japan tee with their logo in the middle from their Eruo online shop but it was sold out, good sign I suppose.

So for those in this thread that made the trip, how did you get tickets? I'm thinking of going over next year and I can't find a thing online aside from buying at Japanese 7-11s.
