The unstoppable monster heel is a gimmick that we've all seen before, but with Rusev its a bit different, in that he usually looks pretty damn stopable.
On Smackdown he was about to lose to Reigns if Big Show didn't interfere, Show once knocked him out but Lana interfered. Even Zack Ryder got a few decent shots in.
So, does Rusev give too much at the cost of it making him look less like a beast?

I honestly think they could make Rusev look more fallible than they do. There's really no reason for the undefeated streak at this point, it's not doing a thing to benefit him because he's already solidified.
That being said, no, I consider his selling his best asset. He's damn good at it.

It's my favourite thing about him. Other than Lana, I mean.

He's damn good at it. There's barely anyone on the roster who sells as well as he does. Barely anyone I've ever seen. If they make him a fixture of the main event, he'll almost guarantee quality matches because he makes moves look like they actually have some scaling effect. Most guys just do the old spiel of acting hurt and then 10 seconds later, pretending like nothing happened. Rusev will sell multiple "wounds" over the course of a match and emphasize them when he's doing pertinent actions (foot hurts; he kicks a guy; indicates his foot hurts even more now).

I think it's awesome he sells so much.... But still finds a way to win. Flair did the same thing in the late 80s.
If I was booking I keep the U.S. title on rusev another year. The title picture is crowded right now with Cena Lesnar reigns Bryan and Rollins. Throw in Ambrose and Wyatt and that's a lot. If you build it up long enough you have another intriguing story, not as powerful as takers, but something people want to see.

Selling makes him look even better, as he's beating people who are actually hurting him at the same time rather than just flicking a switch and going into 'win match now' mode. With proper selling both competitors can benefit from a match regardless of result.

I like it because it humanises him due to the monster heel schtick being cliched to hell. He is a real wrestler who just happens to be a ruthless bulldozer

The best way to keep an undefeated monster heel look interesting in a long period of time is to make him look more beatable as time progresses. It sells he may lose one day and this could be the day and Swagger of all people could end his streak

I think Rusev's doing just fine. In fact I'd have him be the one to finally reunify the US/IC titles since the MitB is basically the top secondary "title" at the moment anyway. I'd have him beat Cena clean then be the Semi-Main event super heel feuding with the likes of Cena, Orton and Ziggler while Bryan feuds with Rollins alongside Reigns, Bray & Ambrose on top.
Then by this time next year have the top tier be Bryan/Ambrose/Rollins/Reigns/Rusev/Ziggler/Orton with Cena/Bray/Harper/Ryback/Barrett/Sheamus/Cesaro all in the hunt for the unified IC title.
