What is the best way to explain the Streak in its early days? Did the WWF intentionally want Taker to win every match at Wrestlemania he took part in? Was it coincidental that he kept winning until one year someone pointed out that he was undefeated? What was the Streak before it was called that?

By all accounts it was coincidental.
Including the story that he was originally booked to lose to Jake Roberts for instance but Jake wanted out so they had Taker beat him.

I think the first reference to it at all was at the Mania Flair and Taker fought, after Taker won, he counted all the wins on his hand. I can't recall anyone noticing the Streak at all before this much. If they did, it certainly wasn't "the Streak".

But it didn't really become the focal point until Wrestlemania 21 with Orton. Wrestlemania 11 had Taker/Bundy fighting over the stolen urn, Diesel got his match due to costing Undertaker a title match against Bret. Kane/Taker 1 had the whole "I will not fight my brother" story. Bossman was chosen to take down the ministry. Triple H at X7 had the "i've beaten everyone except Undertaker". Flair cost Undertaker a match and Taker wanted to get a match with Flair by any means. I'm amazed that I remember most of these build ups.

They may have mentioned it in passing. Perhaps Taker counting the wins on his fingers is the first acknowledgement I truly remember and I have some vague memory of people online mentioning his undefeated streak at this point.

It was mentioned in passing in a lot of the buildups until 21, when it turned into the storyline for Orton to face Undertaker. For example, I remember taker counting to ten with his fingers after beating Flair at WM 18.

It was all coincidental. If it wasn't, they would've had him go over Giant Gonzalez clean rather than a half-assed DQ.

I don't recall it ever being a thing prior to Wrestlemania X-8. They may have known about it prior to that, but with the exception of Triple H at 17, Sid at 13 and Kane at 14, Taker was usually fighting jabronis.

They totally lucked into The Streak. I will say that it is impressive that Taker was so over/heavily pushed from the get go that for a decade, the default booking was "ah, have Taker go over". I honestly think that's the part that makes it legit impressive in more of a sports sense.

Some of it was luck too. in the WWE produced Jake Roberts documentary he stated that he was originally slated to win at Taker's second mania... but Jake decided he wanted to leave so they swapped it. I think there was talk of Gonzales beating him as well before they settled on the DQ ending as well.

Unless they were going to try and restart the Jake/Warrior feud. It just doesn't make sense to beat a character like the Undertaker when he had just turned face. I still am shocked that Taker and Gonzalez didn't go to some kind of no contest.
