Exactly what was the story with Russo and Hogan?

They had a worked shoot planned where Jarrett would lay down for Hulk, Hulk would take the belt and leave and set up Booker v. Jarrett for that night. On down the line (Halloween Havoc I believe) they would have Booker v. Hulk v. Jarrett to crown the true champion (spoiler: Hulk wins). Where it gets tricky is Russo's promo, Russo has said it was 100% work and everyone was in on it while Hulk and Bischoff say it was not planned and was Russo going into business for himself as he hated Hulk having creative control. Either way it led to Hulk suing Russo and WCW.

From Bischoff's book:
- No agreement on a finish in the days leading up to the show. Bischoff feels Russo didn't want to do anything with Hogan.
- On July 4, five days before the show, Bischoff's father dies.
- While attending the funeral, Bischoff talks to Russo on the phone. Russo is said to have a "shitty attitude" and "just didn't want Hogan on the roster."
- Bischoff doesn't get to Daytona, FL for the PPV until the afternoon of the show and shows up to find that Russo has went ahead and held the traditional production meeting without him. Bischoff feels that Russo used Bischoff's attention on the death of his father to swoop and take over everything that was happening.
- Bischoff meets up with Hogan and lays out a plan: Hogan wins by DQ, cuts a promo about everything being bullshit, and leaves. WCW would then hold a tournament to crown a new champion. Two heels would end up in the final at Halloween Havoc, Hogan would show up, and be added to the match. Hogan agrees to the plan.
- Bischoff calls Brad Siegel to give him a heads up that what Hogan is going to do on the PPV is a work. Siegel agrees but says Russo has to be made aware of the plan. Bischoff does not want this because he feels Russo can't be trusted, but he does as told. Russo says he's on board.
- Hogan "compromises" with Jeff Jarrett "a little" on the finish (no details as to what that means).
- Segment happens. When Hogan and Bischoff leave afterwards, they take a half-hour flight to Hogan's home in Tampa.
- By the time they land, their phones are ringing like crazy with the news of what Russo did after they were gone (denouncing Hogan and making Booker vs. Jarrett for later in the show, which was not part of the discussed plan according to Bischoff).
- Hogan is livid and immediately calls his attorney, and Bischoff tells Siegel he is no longer willing to work with Russo.
- Bischoff has a meeting with Siegel, and when Siegel decides to not dump Russo, Bischoff tells him he's done, and they can have Russo run things without him. Bischoff states that he believes Siegel would have dumped Russo if he knew Hogan was serious about a lawsuit.
According to Russo, the whole thing was a work, including his promo. He also claims that to make it look real, he didn't let Jarrett know that Hogan was aware of Jarrett's role in the segment. Jarrett was led to believe by Russo that Hogan had refused to lose under any circumstances, so Jarrett was to just to lay down and lose so Hogan could get his way.

From Bischoff's book: - Segment happens. When Hogan and Bischoff leave afterwards, they take a half-hour flight to Hogan's home in Tampa. I love that Hogan could not stay for like 45 more minutes. Like as soon as his segment was done he says "Cut! Print! I'm outta here!"

Everything would been fine if Russo didn't call Hogan bald. Seriously, that is the main thing that set off Hogan. Not getting called a piece of shit or backstage poison. But getting called out for his chrome dome.

Russo also has said that he only agreed to Hogan's idea of doing a Champ vs Champ match do get him to go away but he had no plans on using him ever again.
